Drag races are a good way to find which car offers better initial acceleration. While acceleration is dependent on various factors, it gives a fair idea on which vehicle is quicker off the line. Well, here is a video that shows a drag race between Kia Seltos and Land Rover Discovery Sport. The video has been shot on an empty road but it is a public road and such races are illegal. We are using the video to give an idea between the initial acceleration of both the vehicles.

A Land Rover Discovery Sport and a Kia Seltos have been used for the drag race. As per the video, both the vehicles are powered by a diesel engine and get an automatic transmission. Even though Kia Seltos and Land Rover Discovery Sport belong to completely different segments and the price of the Discovery Sport is much higher compared to the Seltos, the combination of diesel-automatic makes the drag race very interesting.

The video shows both dig drag racing and rolling drag racing, giving us an idea on how the vehicles behave differently under different situations. At the start, two rounds of dig drag racing show that the Kia Seltos is much quicker off-the-line. It gains a few metres on the Land Rover Discovery Sport and maintains the lead for about 300-400 metres. However, during the rolling drag racing from a speed of 50 km/h, the Discovery Sport takes the lead instantly and wins the race both the times.

Coming to the specifications, the Kia Seltos diesel is powered by a 1.5-litre engine that generates a maximum power of 113 Bhp and peak torque of 250 Nm. The automatic diesel variants of the car get a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The Land Rover Discovery Sport comes powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 148 Bhp and peak torque of 382 Nm. It gets a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Now you may ask how Kia Seltos wins the drag race even though it is much less powerful. The answer lies in the weight of the vehicles and the power-to-weight ratio. The land Rover Discovery Sport diesel weighs around 2.6 tons while the Seltos diesel-automatic weighs around 1.3 tons. The Discovery Sport weighs nearly double that of the Seltos and that’s why it lags behind during the initial acceleration. Once the Discovery Sport starts rolling, it becomes much quicker and faster compared to Kia Seltos. That is why the Land Rover Discovery wins the rolling drag race at 50 km/h.
