The Mahindra Thar has already amassed 20,000 bookings and waiting times have really shot up. While some variants are now commanding waiting times of up to 7 months, the average waiting period for the spanking new 4X4 is about 23 weeks of a little under 6 months. Such has been the overwhelming demand for the 2020 Thar that Mahindra is considering boosting production capacity by a full 50 %. While the current monthly production of the 2020 Thar stands at 2,000 units, from January 2021, the automaker plans to build 3,000 units of the SUV in order to shorten waiting times. Meanwhile, the all-new 2020 Mahindra Thar meant for customers has already begun reaching dealerships around India. Here are images of the all-new Thar from a Mahindra dealership in Kerala. Over 500 units of the 2020 Mahindra Thar will reach customer garages by this weekend.

Veejay Nakra, Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. had to say this about the terrific demand for the new Thar,
We are overwhelmed with this unprecedented response that the All-New Thar has garnered. I must admit the response has surpassed all our expectations and production capacities. Hence the wait for the All-New Thar will be longer than expected. We sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience and unwavering confidence in us. We had planned for a capacity of about 2,000 vehicles per month and are now getting ready to ramp it up to 3,000 by January. This would help us bring down the waiting period to a reasonable timeline.
The all-new 2020 Thar was launched in India on the 2nd of October, after Mahindra first unveiled it on 15th August 2020. Prices for the 4X4 off-roader start from Rs. 9.8 lakh for the AX STD variant. A 6 speed manual gearbox, a four wheel drive transfer case, soft top, ABS and twin airbags are standard on the base trim. A 6 seat layout is standard on all soft-top trims of the new Thar.
Moving up trims, 2020 Mahindra Thar buyers get to choose between soft top, hard top and convertible top options, a 2.2 liter-4 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 130 Bhp-300 Nm outputs, 6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes for both petrol and diesel engines, a slew of additional safety features and creature comforts, and of course, a four seat layout with front facing rear seats.
