Tata Motors was the last manufacturer to enter the premium hatchback segment in the Indian market, but this helped them to prepare and get most of the things right. One gripe that some people had been with the engine that it didn’t feel lively enough. However, the Indian manufacturer has the solution to that too.

They will soon be launching the Altroz Turbo which is expected to launch this month and has been spied quite a few times. It will be coming with the detuned version of Nexon’s engine. Where Nexon’s 1.2-turbo petrol motor churns out 120hp and 170Nm, the Altroz Turbo will produce 110 Bhp of max power and peak torque output of 140 Nm with the same engine. It will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox for now. Although, a 6-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission is in the pipeline. It should be priced from Rs. 7.99 lakhs ex-showroom.

Currently, the Altroz is offered with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 83PS of max power and peak torque output of 113Nm. There is also a 1.5-litre diesel engine on sale, which produces 90PS of max power and peak torque output of 200Nm. Both the engines are offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox and there is no automatic transmission on offer.

Competitors

Once launched, Tata Altroz Turbo will be competing against the likes of Hyundai i20 Turbo and the Volkswagen Polo GT.

The new generation of Hyundai i20 Turbo will be sharing its engine with the Venue which means that it will get the 1.0-litre turbocharged, direct-injection petrol engine. It will be producing 118 Bhp of max power and a peak torque output of 172 Nm. It will be offered with a 6-speed iMT which is a clutchless manual gearbox developed by Hyundai. There is also a 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission that you can get with the 1.0-litre Turbo. 2020 Hyundai i20 Turbo prices start from Rs. 10.67 lakhs ex-showroom.

Then there is the Volkswagen Polo GT, which received a new engine and transmission this year. It now comes with a 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol motor which is known for its punchy performance. As standard, it is offered with a slick-shifting 6-speed manual gearbox, while there is also a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox on offer. The Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI starts from Rs. 8.08 lakhs ex-showroom for the manual gearbox, while the automatic torque converter transmission is priced at Rs. 9.19 lakhs ex-showroom and the Polo GT is priced at Rs. 9.67 lakhs ex-showroom.
