Japanese car manufacturer Toyota has been in India for over two decades. They became popular among buyers for their reliability. Popularity of Toyota’s expensive products like Innova Crysta and Fortuner are a proof of that. Fortuner is one of the most popular SUV in the segment. It competes with SUVs like Ford Endeavour and recently launched MG Gloster in the segment. We currently have the new generation Fortuner in the country that was launched back in 2016. Here we have a video that shows a drag race between the old and new gen Fortuner. Which one wins the race?, let’s watch the video to find out.
The video has been uploaded by Wheels Wanderlust on their youtube channel. The video starts by explaining the technical specification of the engine that power both the versions. The older version of Toyota Fortuner is powered by a 3.0 litre diesel engine that generates 169 Bhp and 343 Nm of peak torque. The latest or the current version of Toyota Fortuner uses a 2.8 litre diesel engine that generates 174.5 Bhp and 450 Nm of peak torque.

In order to conduct this drag race, vloggers had come to a straight stretch of road which was closed. On paper it looked like, the new gen Fortuner has an upper hand. The new gen Fortuner produced almost 5 Bhp and over 100 Nm of torque more than the older version. It looked like, the new gen Fortuner was going to be a clear winner. Vloggers then line up the vehicle and start revving the vehicle hard to get a perfect launch.
As soon as the race starts, the new generation Fortuner just moves forward with some amount of wheel spin. While the new gen had had a smoking start, the old generation had a normal start. Both vehicles were right next to each other but, the older generation Fortuner was having the lead for a slight margin. The current generation Fortuner was being pushed hard to take the lead but, the older version was still maintaining the lead.
Old Fortuner maintained the lead till the end and won the race. After the race, the vlogger also does, 0-100 kmph test on both the version. The current generation Fortuner did 0-100 kmph in 12.14 seconds with traction control turned ON. Old gen Toyota Fortuner was almost 2 seconds faster than that and did 0-100 kmph sprint in 10.99 seconds.
The reason why old Fortuner won even after having less power and torque in comparison to the current version is because of the way in which power is delivered in both the models. In comparison to the current version, the acceleration in the older version is a lot more sharper. The current version has a linear power delivery which makes it slower by a small margin in the drag race. The other reason, is the weight and driving style. Both driver’s had different driving style which would also affect the result.
Coming to the current version of Fortuner, Toyota will be launching the facelifted version of the Fortuner earlier next year. It has received cosmetic changes and the interiors have also been updated. The other big news is that Toyota is also expected to launch the more premium version of Fortuner, named Legender in the market. This is also expected to launch in the market later next year.
