Earlier, We were all expecting that Kia would launch the Gravity Edition of Seltos in India. However, that did not happen. Now, Kia India has teased Project X on their social media platforms. Project X is related to the Seltos X-Line that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020.

Only Cosmetic changes

The X-Line version of the Seltos will be only a cosmetic upgrade over the regular Seltos. The concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 came with matte grey colour with orange accents just like on the Anniversary edition. Except that the Anniversary Edition is not offered in a matte paint job.

The normal chrome was replaced with dark chrome. The accents were placed on the fog lamp surround the Kia logo in the alloy wheel and rear bumper. The Seltos spelt out in the middle of the tailgate. The X-Line badging was there on the tailgate and the front grille. It also got side skirts and roof rails.  Other changes include a sporty front and rear bumper.

No mechanical changes

There will be no mechanical to the Seltos because that would increase the costs significantly and as of now, the Seltos is offered in plenty of engine and gearbox options. So, there is a combination for everyone. Seltos is offered with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine.

The naturally aspirated engine produces 115 PS of max power and 144 Nm of peak torque. You can get it with a 6-speed manual gearbox, 6-speed intelligent Manual Gearbox or a proper CVT automatic transmission. The manual gearbox should deliver a fuel economy of 16.5 kmpl while the CVT should deliver 16.8 kmpl.

The diesel engine produces 115 PS of max power and 250 Nm of peak torque. It is offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The fuel efficiency figure as per ARAI of the manual gearbox is 21 kmpl while the automatic should return 18 kmpl.

Then there is the highlight of the Seltos. The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine comes with direct injection. It produces 140 PS of max power and 242 Nm of peak torque. You can get it with a 6-speed manual gearbox if you love stick shifts or you can opt for the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The manual gearbox returns a fuel efficiency figure of 16.1 kmpl while the DCT returns 16.5 kmpl as per ARAI.

Kia will not be introducing an all-wheel-drive powertrain with the Seltos. Just like the current one, it will stay front-wheel drive only. This is because adding an all-wheel-drive powertrain would increase the price of the SUV substantially.

Price and competitors

It seems like the Anniversary addition will be replaced with the X-Line. It will be priced slightly higher than the regular Seltos. The X-Line is not expected to be offered with all the variants. Only selected variants would get an option of X-Line. The Seltos competes against Renault Duster, Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Skoda Kushaq and the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun.
