Jimny vs Thar Sales

In February 2024, Maruti Suzuki sold 322 units of the Jimny, double the amount from the previous month. However, this figure still lags behind its competitor, the Mahindra Thar, which sold 5,812 units during the same period (a 16.1% increase compared to last year). The Jimny’s lower sales are attributed to overproduction leading to excess stock at dealerships, reduced interest after the initial excitement among enthusiasts, and less appeal to non-enthusiast buyers compared to the more versatile Thar.

Meanwhile, Fardeen Khan became the first Bollywood celebrity to own a Maruti Suzuki Jimny 4X4, a notable shift from the lavish cars usually associated with celebrities. Despite its anticipation among off-road enthusiasts, the Jimny’s sales have been modest, attributed to its pricing. The Jimny, celebrated for its off-road capability, light weight, and compact size, now comes in a more practical 5-door version, initially offered in India and now also exported. Built on the YY8 skateboard platform for enhanced space and handling, the eVX measures around 4.3 meters in length. It features distinct LED daytime running lights, the potential for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) with multiple cameras, and all-wheel disc brakes. Interior glimpses suggest a large touchscreen and premium features. The eVX is expected to offer 45 kWh and 60 kWh battery variants, with the 60 kWh model potentially providing a 550 km range and prices likely starting below Rs. 25 lakhs.

2024 Maruti Swift

The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift, expected to launch in India in two months, will receive significant updates. The new model, already introduced in Japan, sports a redesigned exterior with a new grille and LED daytime running lights, along with interior enhancements like a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It will house a 1.2L three-cylinder Z series engine with a mild-hybrid system, aiming for high fuel efficiency. The top model may cost around Rs. 12 lakhs, and it could be the first in its segment to offer a strong hybrid system.

2026 Maruti Suzuki YMC electric MPV

Maruti Suzuki is set to launch the YMC Electric MPV in the second half of 2026, following the debut of their first electric vehicle, the eVX SUV. The YMC MPV will utilize the same skateboard platform developed in collaboration with Toyota, allowing for a versatile design from hatchbacks to MPVs. Expected to offer 40 kWh and 60 kWh battery options, the larger battery could provide a range of 550 kilometers. Additionally, a Toyota version of the YMC is anticipated, following the collaborative trend between Suzuki and Toyota.

New Hybrid Powertrain for XL6 MPV

Maruti Suzuki plans to launch a strong hybrid powertrain for the XL6 MPV within the next 24 months, targeting fuel efficiency of over 30 km/l. This system uses a petrol engine to generate electricity for an electric motor that drives the wheels, significantly improving efficiency compared to the current petrol and CNG versions. This technology could reduce emissions while offering a balance between performance and cost-effectiveness, marking a strategic move towards electrification and expanding Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid lineup.
