The much-awaited Mahindra Thar 5-door or the Thar Armada has once again made an appearance, offering a glimpse into what could be its lower-spec variant. This 5 seater version of the iconic SUV has been in the pipeline for over two years now. The 5 door Thar targets people looking for a proper off-roader without compromising on boot space and seating comfort.

The newly surfaced spy shots reveal the interior of the Thar 5 door. The pictures hint at a possibility of a lower trim of Thar 5 door considering that it misses some features. The dashboard lacks an infotainment system and analogue meter can be seen in place of the digital meter seen in earlier spy shots.
While it may lack certain high end features, it still retains essentials like a front armrest and steering-mounted controls. Another noticeable aspect is that it retains the alloy wheels of 3 door Thar.
The higher-spec variants are expected to offer a range of upgrades over the existing 3-door version. A number of new features will be added in the 5 door Thar. These may include a larger 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a fully digital driver’s display, a single-pane sunroof, rear AC vents, and an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror (IRVM).
Safety features could consist of up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and even a 360-degree camera in top variants. Additional safety features such as traction control, hill descent control, and seatbelt reminder for all passengers will be carried forward from the 3 door Thar. Talking about the safety rating, the existing Thar scored four stars in GNCAP. The Armada is also expected to score the same.
Some other features which the Armada will offer over the existing Thar include Dual-zone AC, rear disc brakes, electric fuel lid opener and rear center armrest. The Thar 5 door will have the same engine options as the 3 door Thar. Some minor performance tweaks are expected to pull the additional weight. The choices include a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine, both mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
In the 3 door Thar, the petrol engine produces 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque while the diesel engine produces 130 hp and 300 Nm of torque. Similar to the 3 door Thar, the Armada will initially be launched in 4WD configuration with 2WD following later on.
Expected to be unveiled on August 15, 2024, the Thar 5-door could hit the roads in the final quarter of 2024. There are no confirmations regarding the price but it will be expensive than the 3 door Thar with prices starting from around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom).
It will face competition from the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door, upcoming mini Fortuner and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. With its robust features, enhanced performance, and a larger persona, the Mahindra Thar 5-door is positioned to make waves in the SUV segment once again. August 15th is when it could be unveiled in India, followed by an official launch a month down the line.
