Delhi’s traffic police will soon get handguns to check crime, and to also protect themselves from criminals carrying firearms. All traffic police officers above the rank of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) will get 9 mm pistols. These officers will also man barricades on Delhi’s border to check criminals from freely moving across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Delhi Traffic Police

Notably, this is the first time ever that traffic cops in Delhi are getting sidearms to check crime, and defend themselves. This move comes at a time when a traffic cop -guarding the Salimgarh bypass in Old Delhi – was run over by a truck he tried to stop at a checkpost. Announcing these changes, Delhi traffic commissioner Amulya Patnaik said,

Traffic policemen are present on the road through the day, which makes their job strenuous. The objective of our interaction was to motivate them to take up measures so that their job becomes easier. We have asked them to evolve with new strategies every day.

Delhi’s Traffic Department has been asked to implement the pistol rule in the next ten days. Delhi’s geography is quite unique, in that the National Capital shares its border with  Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, from where there’s heavy movement of people and goods. Delhi is also very close to Rajasthan and Punjab. This makes guarding borders of the National Capital quite challenging.
