Tata Motors has announced that the Nexon compact SUV will get an automated manual transmission option in the future. We now know that the AMT will be offered both on the petrol and diesel engined models. An internal document from Tata Motors reveals this.
The Nexon AMT will be the only sub-4 meter compact SUV in India to get automatic gearboxes in both petrol and diesel engines. Other SUVs like the Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra TUV300 also offer automatic gearboxes, but only in one engine option each. For example, the EcoSport gets a petrol automatic while the TUV300 gets a diesel AMT.
The automatic variants of the Nexon are expected to be launched in early 2018. Tata Motors may choose to launch it during the Auto Expo, which will happen in early February 2018. The Nexon AMT will be a 6 speed unit as both the petrol and diesel versions of the compact SUV already have 6 speed manual transmissions and the AMT unit will only automate these transmissions. Tata Motors is also expected to add a sunroof to the Nexon. This option may also be available on the automatic variants. For now, it’s confirmed that the AMT variants of the Nexon will be sold in the top-end XZA trim.
The Nexon comes with 2 engine options, a 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol with 110 PS and 170 Nm, and a 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel with 110 PS and 260 Nm. The petrol engine has an ARAI certified mileage of 17.88 Kmpl while the diesel engine’s mileage is rated at 23.97 Kmpl.
These mileage figures are expected to be similar on the AMT variants as well. Expect the AMT variants to be priced about Rs. 50,000-60,000 higher than equivalent manual variants. These variants will make the Nexon quite attractive for buyers who want a combination of convenience and mileage, at an affordable cost.
