Toyota to launch electric cars in India by 2020

Japanese auto giant, Toyota offers hybrid cars in India like the Prius and the Camry Hybrid. However, there are no full-electric vehicles from the brand yet. Toyota has now announced that it will launch more than ten battery-powered electric cars by early 2020s. The cars will be targeted at the countries like China, India, USA and European nations. Toyota aims to sell more than 5.5 million electrified vehicles that include 1 million zero-emission vehicles (Battery Operated EVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles by 2030.

Toyota is pushing for the development of such vehicle amidst the growing popularity. The new vehicles will include hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), Battery Operated EVs (BEVs) and Fuel Cell EVs (FCEVs). Various models from the Toyota line-up will be selected for the electrification process.

“Toyota will accelerate the popularisation of BEVs with more than 10 BEV models to be available worldwide by the early 2020s, starting in China, before entering other markets – the gradual introduction to Japan, India, the United States and Europe is expected,” the company said in a statement.

The fuel cell electric vehicles will be developed for both commercial and passenger use. Toyota has also said that by 2025, every model of Toyota and Lexus line-up will get a dedicated electrified model or will have an option electrified option. No models will be developed further with an electrified version of the same.

For the Indian market, Toyota announced its partnership with Maruti Suzuki earlier. The collaboration will introduce new electric vehicles by 2020 in the Indian market.  Suzuki has also announced its plan to construct a lithium-ion battery plant with its partners in Gujarat. The Indian government is already pushing to make India and all-electric vehicle nation 2030 and the new move can help the brand to capture a major share of the market.
