Yamaha launched the BS4 compliant version of the R3 sportsbike earlier this year. While bookings have been open for a while now, the bike has now started arriving at Yamaha dealerships. Deliveries are expected to begin soon. The Yamaha R3 BS4 is priced at Rs. 3.48 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi. It’s one of the priciest 300cc bikes sold in India. It is CKD assembled here and this explains the high price tag. Buyers of the R3 opt for it due to the high quality and refinement levels.
The R3 is powered by a 320cc, parallel twin engine that produces a peak power of 42 PS at 10,750 rpm, and a peak torque of 29.6 Nm at 9,000 rpm. The engine gets liquid cooling, twin cam heads with 4 valves per cylinder and fuel injection as standard. Transmission is a 6 speed manual unit.
The bike uses telescopic front forks and a monoshock rear shock absorber for bump absorption. Tubeless tyres are standard and so are alloy wheels. Disc brakes are standard on both wheels, and Yamaha now offers dual channel ABS as standard on the R3.
The bike is available in two colours – Blue and Black. It weighs 173 kilograms and gets a 14 liter fuel tank that gives it an effective range of over 300 kilometers. While it looks sporty, the R3’s riding position is not totally extreme. The bike can still be used effectively for city commuting and touring as well if one doesn’t have issues with a crouched riding position over longer distances. Compared to The R15, the R3 is actually less extreme in terms of riding position.
Competition for the R3 is almost non-existent at this price point. Only the Benelli 302R is a direct rival. If you want something a lot cheaper, the TVS Apache 310 is a good bet, and so is the KTM Duke RC390, which actually offers better performance than the R3.
