Recently, we told you about 5 most powerful cars you can buy for less than Rs 10 lakh. While a high power helps you attain a higher top speed and go faster than other road users, it’s actually the torque that plays a major part in helping you achieve the high speeds faster. So, basically, both power and torque play an important role in making a car more fun. Here are as many as 5 mainstream cars that offer a high torque-to-cost ratio.

Volkswagen Ameo Diesel

The Volkswagen Ameo is the cheapest VW-badged car you can buy in India. However, it gets the same 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine that powers the much costlier Polo GT TDI. This engine offers a maximum power of 108 bhp along with a peak torque of 250 Nm. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. There’s also a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox on offer but the auto variant costs significantly more. Available at a base price of Rs 6.65 lakh, the Ameo diesel offers a torque-per-lakh-rupees figure of 37.49. The Ameo is also the only compact sedan in the segment that offers a torque of 250 Nm.

Tata Nexon Diesel

The next car on our list is the Tata Nexon diesel. The Nexon is among the newest compact SUVs available in the country, but has been fairly quick to make a name for itself. The Nexon diesel gets its juice from a powerful 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine that offers a maximum power of 110 PS along with a peak torque of 260 Nm. The Nexon diesel is available at a base price of Rs 7.16 lakh. This enables the Nexon to offer a torque-per-lakh-rupees figure of 36.31. The Tata Nexon diesel also offers multiple driving modes, which help the driver of this compact SUV to optimize the power and fuel efficiency of the Nexon as per usage conditions.

Ford Freestyle Diesel

The third car on our list is the diesel variant of the recently launched Freestyle. The Freestyle is among the most affordable pseudo SUVs you can buy, but it comes with a 1.5-litre engine that offers a maximum power of 99 Bhp along with a peak torque of 215 Nm. Available at a base price of Rs 6.09 lakh, the Freestyle diesel offers a torque-per-lakh-rupees figure of 35.30, which is not much lower than what the Ameo offers.

Ford Aspire Diesel

The next car on our list is also a Ford. Moreover, it features the same diesel engine that powers the Freestyle. The diesel variant of the Ford Aspire compact sedan gets its juice from a 1.5-litre diesel engine variant that outputs a maximum power of 99 Bhp along with a peak torque of 215 Nm. The Aspire diesel has a base price of Rs 6.83 lakh, which helps it offer you a torque-per-lakh-rupees figure of 31.47. It may be noted here that the Aspire will soon get a facelift. The facelift will feature the same diesel engine. However, in all probability, it will be cheaper than the current version. This should help it offer an enhanced torque-to-cost ratio. Interestingly, the Aspire is the only other sub-4-meter compact sedan, after the Volkswagen Ameo, on our list here.

Mahindra Getaway

The last vehicle on this list is the Mahindra Scorpio Getaway. The Getaway is basically the pick-up version of the Scorpio SUV. The Getaway is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk engine that outputs a maximum power of 128 bhp along with a peak torque of 273 Nm. The double-cabin vehicle has an ex-showroom price of Rs 9.83 lakh. This gives the Scorpio Getaway a torque-to-cost figure of 28.22. We have included the Scorpio Getaway and the not the Scorpio on our list here as the latter costs more than Rs 10 lakh.
