The all-new Hyundai Santro will be launched in India during the festive season, sometime in October 2018. Hyundai will use the Santro badge on its latest hatchback but is expected to add a suffix to the Santro name. The CEO of Hyundai India, YK Koo, has revealed that the all-new Santro will be the first Hyundai car to feature an automated manual transmission. He’s also noted that he expects 20-30 % of the total sales of the Hyundai Santro to come from the AMT variants. Notably, Hyundai will offer the same AMT unit on multiple upcoming cars including the sub-4 meter QXi codenamed compact SUV and the all-new Grand i10.
Coming back to the all-new Santro, the car’s making a comeback nearly 20 years after Hyundai first introduced the nameplate, on a tall-boy hatchback. True to the original Santro, the all-new model is expected to have a tall boy design. It’ll eventually replace the Eon and become Hyundai’s cheapest car in India. Initially though, the new Santro and Eon will sell alongside each other. As for pricing, we expect Hyundai to price the new Santro between 3-4 lakhs. At this price point, the new Hyundai hatchback will compete with a range of cars including the Maruti Alto, Renault Kwid and the Tata Tiago.
As for mechanicals, the engine hasn’t been confirmed yet. We’re expecting a 1.1 liter-4 cylinder unit on the new Santro and this motor was also seen on the i10 hatchback, which was discontinued a few years ago. Some other reports claim that the Santro will use a 1 liter-3 cylinder motor borrowed from the Eon. Petrol, and petrol-LPG and petrol-CNG options are likely to be offered on the car. In terms of safety features, the car will meet BNVSAP safety norms. The all-new Hyundai Santro will be the brand’s biggest launch for this year and is expected to bring in big numbers as the entry-level hatchback space is a big volume segment.
