Hyundai India has launched the much-awaited Santro hatchback in India. The Santro name is making a comeback to the Indian market after a long time and will take on the cars like Tata Tiago, Renault Kwid and Maruti Celerio in the segment. The price of the all-new Santro starts from Rs. Rs. 3.9 lakhs and will be available in five trims and nine variants. Hyundai opened the bookings of the Santro earlier and the company has received 23,500 units of the car in 13 days.

Just like the previous-generation vehicle, the all-new Santro carries a tall boy design. However, it only shares the name with the older Santro and everything else in the vehicle new. It is based on the same platform as the Hyundai i10, which was discontinued in the Indian market. The body itself looks inspired by the i10 but it looks much chunkier and gets strong creases on the body.
It looks modern with a body-wide black enclosure at the front that also houses the chrome grille. The headlamps are elongated while the fog lamps shaped to fit snuggly in the black enclosure at front. There will no alloy wheels in the all-new Santro even on the top-end Asta version. The all-new Santro will be powered only with a petrol engine and there will be factory-fitted CNG variants too. The 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is the same one that was used in the i10 but it has been thoroughly updated and tuned to meet the latest emission norms. The engine is BS VI-ready and will be updated as per the new emission enforcements in India.
The petrol-powered engine produces a maximum power of 69 PS and a peak torque of 99 Nm. The Santro returns an ARAI-certified fuel economy of 20.3 km/l, which is lower than the Maruti Celerio, which returns a maximum of 23.1 km/l from the 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine that develops a maximum of 67 PS and 90 Nm. The Santro gets the 5-speed manual transmission as standard and for the first time, Hyundai is also offering the AMT automatic transmission. The CNG powered variants will get the same engine but will produce a maximum of 59 PS and 77 Nm.
On the inside, Santro will offer a long list of features just like the all other Hyundai cars. The Sportz and Asta variants of the all-new Santro offer a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment set-up. It gets Bluetooth and Mirror Link. The Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for the first time in the segment. It also gets rear AC-vents, which are again the first-in-segment feature. The cabin itself is dual-tone and comes with a black and beige shade. The all-new Santro has grown in the size and provides a bigger interior space too.
Safety-wise, Santro will offer features like dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, seatbelt reminder, speed alert, reverse parking sensors and speed-sensing door lock. The standard features include driver-side airbag with ABS. Interestingly, Hyundai also offers a special variant of the Santro which will be offered in Diana Green shade. The hatchback gets colour-coordinated interiors with green interiors.
