Mahindra launched the all-new XUV 300 in the Indian market with a shocking value-for-money price tag. Mahindra is already working on an electric version of the newest SUV, which will be launched in 2020. Dr Pawan Goenka said,

“When we bring out this product (XUV300) in the electric vehicle space, it’s going to create a lot of excitement. It will have 380 volts, 200 km range and there will be an option to increase the range up to 350-400 km and this is what will create the excitement at a price point”

Mahindra XUV 300 Electric gets the S210 codename. The upcoming XUV 300 EV will be available in two different versions – Standard Range and Long Range. The Long Range version will get the 350-400 km range while the standard version will get the 200 km range. Mahindra is expected to pack in more batteries for the long-range version and it is also expected to get a more powerful electric motor.

Mahindra and LG Chem have collaborated to create advanced and futuristic Li-ion batteries that will be used in various products. The upcoming Mahindra XUV 300 EV is also expected to be powered by the batteries developed by the collaboration. LG Chem will develop a unique cell that will be exclusive for the India application. The collaboration will also supply Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt based Li-ion batteries that are high in energy density. Such batteries will be compact in size and will pack more power and juice that will allow the vehicle to extend the range of an EV.

The XUV 300 will be much more expensive than the regular version of the vehicle in the Indian market. The batteries are quite expensive but it is the future of automobiles. At a later stage, the price of the batteries is expected to come down. However, there is a long way to go before that happens.

Mahindra is currently the only manufacturer that sells EVs in India. Mahindra offers E2O and Verito EV in the Indian market. Mahindra will also launch a slew of other electric vehicles in the Indian market including the KUV EV. Mahindra already showcased the KUV 100 EV at the 2018 Auto Expo and the car is expected to be launched by the end of this year or early next year.

In the near future, there will be a range of electric vehicles that will be launched in the Indian market. Hyundai will soon launch the all-new Kona EV in the Indian market. Nissan is planning to launch the all-new Leaf in the Indian market later this year too. Tata will also launch the Tigor EV and the Tiago EV for the private car buyers. The Indian customers will get a lot of choices in the EV market in the next two years.
