We recently did a comprehensive story covering the service costs of various petrol cars. Here is the diesel avatar of the same. All figures are indicative figures and actual figures at the time of service may vary.
Compact hatchback
Maruti Celerio
In the compact hatchback segment, the diesel contenders are very few as of now. The cheapest to maintain over a 6 year period is the Maruti Celerio. Over a 6 year period, it will set you back by Rs 23,584. Every 10,000 kms you only need to change the engine oil and the oil filter which is roughly Rs 1770. Every 20,000 kms you require a coolant top up and a brake oil as well. Including labor that will set you back by Rs 5090. Air filter is required to be changed every 40,000 kms. Overall a reasonable car to maintain.
The Beat diesel is just a little higher at Rs 25, 560. The Tiago is too new and details on it are yet to come.
Upper compact hatchback
Toyta Etios Liva
Toyotas are known for their long term reliability and being easy to maintain. Well the fact that the Liva is the cheapest to maintain isn’t surprising then. 6 year maintenance will set you back by Rs 18,196. 10,000 km service includes only oil change and oil filter change which is a cheap Rs 1800. Every 30,000 kms you also need to change the oil filter which is an added Rs 340. Brake fluid to be changed every 40,000 kms which is Rs 400.
Second in line is the Ford Figo at roughly Rs 25,000 followed by the Grand i10 at Rs 26,220 and then the Maruti Swift at Rs 28310. The Tata Bolt is Rs 31,220 and the Nissan Micra is the most expensive at Rs 36,415.
Premium hatchback
Maruti Baleno
The Baleno is setting the sales charts on fire with its appeal. The service story is also the same. The Baleno is the cheapest to maintain in the 6 year period at Rs 22,530. Normal service sets you back by Rs 2435 and every 20,000 kms service will be a more expensive Rs 6300.
The Hyundai i20 is next in line with an overall 6 year maintenance cost of Rs 26,000. Surprisingly the next car on the list is the Punto at Rs 40,000 followed by the Jazz at Rs 45,000. Like on the petrol, the Polo is the most expensive to maintain at Rs 52,900.
Compact sedan
Toyota Etios
Like the petrol counter-part, the Etios diesel sedan is the cheapest compact sedan to maintain in a 6 year period. At Rs 18,196, the Etios is way cheaper to maintain that the competition. A normal service with just oil and filters will set you back by Rs 2200 and the labour for a paid service is roughly Rs 1500.
Coming in second place is the Figo Aspire at Rs 23,500, then the Hyundai Xcent at Rs 27,800 followed by the Zest at Rs 31,600 and then Swift Dzire at Rs 31,900. The Amaze is the last car on the list at a whopping Rs 51,800.
Midsize sedan
Hyundai Verna
When the Verna was launched, it was loved by most people for the value proposition it was. It was also really quick in a straight line. Not only that, it is also the cheapest midsize sedan to maintain in a 6 year period. The maintenance costs for 6 years amount to Rs 28,360. A normal service will set you back by Rs 2300 and includes oil and oil filter change as well as an air filter change. Every 20,000 kms a fuel filter change is advised and every 30,000 kms, coolant and brake oil needs to be replaced.
In a closed second position comes the Ciaz at Rs 30,400. The Nissan Sunny is next in line at Rs 37,600 followed by the Fiat Linea at Rs 47,300 and then the Renault Scala at Rs 45,600, Volkswagen Vento at Rs 56,000, Skoda Rapid at Rs 57,300 and lastly we have the Honda City at Rs 57,400. The results are pretty shocking since most people assume that Hondas are cheap to maintain.
Compact SUV
Renault Duster
Surprisingly, the Renault Duster is the cheapest compact SUV to maintain in a 6 year period. At Rs 20,940, it is a good amount cheaper than the competition. A normal service will set you back by Rs 2010 and only includes oil, oil filter and air filter change. Every 20,000 kms you will need to change the AC filter and every 40,000 kms you will need to change the brake oil as well.
Coming in second place is the Ford Ecosport at Rs 24, 100. Ford has worked hard to bring down service costs and it is showing. Third is the Mahindra TUV300 at Rs 25,460. The Creta comes in P4 at Rs 26,100 and the Terrano comes in next at Rs 27,661 closely followed by the Vitara Brezza at Rs 27, 962. The S Cross comes out most expensive in this segment at Rs 32,190.
The Nuvosport and the BR-V are too new to get details on and hence aren’t on the list.
MPV
Mahindra Xylo
The Xylo is the cheapest MPV to maintain at Rs 23,815 over a 6 year period which is very reasonable. A normal service will set you back by Rs 2200. In second place is the Renault Lodgy at Rs 27,000 followed by the Ertiga at Rs 31,100 and lastly the Honda Mobilio at Rs 49,200.
