The government of India has changed the rules for subsidized good available for the armed personnel in India. From 1st June 2019, all the cars that cost more than Rs 12 lakh will no longer be given at subsidized prices. Earlier, all the cars received a discount of 50% on the GST component that made the vehicle much for affordable. With the higher priced vehicles now being similarly priced as the non-CSD vehicles from June 1st, Admiral Sunil Lanba has got a Jeep Compass SUV from Canteen Stores Department at a reduced price, according to NDTV.
Admiral Sunil Lanba will soon get replaced as the Navy Chief of India. It should be noted that the price of the Jeep Compass starts close to Rs 15 lakh. The Compass was the costliest car available in the canteen but soon it will be taken off the shelves when the new rules get implemented on 1st June. It is not known which exact variant did the admiral chose.
The new rules also bring in other changes. The armed force personnel can only get a restricted number of four-wheeled vehicles from CSD. The officers and other ranked personnel can buy one car every eight years. There were no such restrictions on buying the cars till now. Last year, as many as Rs 6,000 crores worth of vehicles were sold through CSD, which caused the budget to overshoot. This is one of the reasons for putting in the new restrictions in place. The government also said that the rule will be reviewed in the future and the rising car prices will be taken into consideration too. However, many soldiers remain unhappy with the move.
The Jeep Compass is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. It has become quite popular in the market and many celebrities have also picked up the most affordable Jeep over other vehicles. The Jeep Compass gets powerful engine choices and the iconic brand name adds a lot of value to the Compass. It should be noted that apart from the Compass, none of the other vehicles in the Jeep’s line-up are made in India.
The Jeep Compass gets a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 161 Bhp and peak torque of 250 Nm. It gets a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission or a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The diesel variants of the Jeep Compass get powered by the 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 170 Bhp and peak torque of 350 Nm. It only gets a 6-speed manual transmission at the moment. Soon, Jeep will introduce the top-of-the-line Trailhawk-rated Compass that will offer an automatic 9-speed dual-clutch transmission with the diesel engine and will also get a low-ratio transfer case.
