Tata first showcased the Altroz as the 45X concept at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. Earlier this year, it was shown in its near-production stage during the Geneva Motor Show. The company will finally launch the premium hatchback during the Diwali festive season this year. Tata recently announced that the Altroz will be the lead car for the Mumbai Marathon scheduled to be held on the 19th of January, 2020. This year, the lead car for this annual marathon was the Harrier SUV which was then launched on the 23rd of January.
Talking about the Altroz, it will be the first car by Tata in the premium hatchback category and hence the car is expected to come loaded to the brim with features among other things. It has been spotted being tested on several occasions now and quite a lot of information about the vehicle is already out now. On the outside, it gets a stylish design that is on the lines of the IMPACt 2.0 design philosophy. The front end gets split headlamps and a large but sleek grille while the rear end gets sharp-looking tail lamps with black cladding in between.
Coming to the interiors of the car, the Altroz will come with a floating touchscreen infotainment console mounted on top of the dashboard. It will also come with a digital instrument cluster, flat bottomed steering wheel, a high-end stereo system, rear AC vents, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control and cruise control among others. The interiors are expected to be quite spacious too with comfortable seats and ample of boot space. Tata will offer both petrol and diesel engine options on the Altroz.
Speaking of which, the petrol engine could the 1.2-litre 3 cylinder unit that is found on the Tata Nexon, albeit in a detuned state. The diesel engine, on the other hand, could also be the one found on the Nexon. This 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel motor will also be detuned for the Altroz in order to increase the fuel economy of the vehicle. A 6-speed manual gearbox is likely to be standard with these engines while a DCT box is also ex[ected to be present on the car, though it could be brought at a later stage.
When launched, the Tata Altroz will rival the likes of the Maruti Baleno, Honda Jazz, Toyota Glanza and Hyundai Elite i20 in the premium hatchback segment. Though there has been no word on the pricing of the car yet, Tata is likely to position the Altroz at a pretty competitive price tag. Apart from the Altroz, Tata is also working on the Altroz EV that will be launched next year in India.
