KTM India has just unveiled the India-spec Adventure 390 adventure motorcycle at the India Bike Week (IBW) in Goa. The KTM Adventure 390 is expected to be priced slightly higher than the Duke, at about Rs. 2.55 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi, and is built in India at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan factory. The Adventure 390 is essentially an on-off road motorcycle aimed at cross country touring, and some amount of off road riding. It’s based on the Duke 390 platform, and shares a slew of parts with the street fighter.
The KTM Adventure 390 showcased at IBW shows a big India-specific change in that it replaces the adjustable front suspension of the international version with non-adjustable upside down front suspension. This change is likely to reduce the price of the India-spec Adventure 390 by about Rs. 10,000-15,000, or even more. At the rear, suspension is a monoshock with adjust-ability for both compression and rebound. Suspension travel stands at 170 mm at the front and 177 mm at the rear. Apart from this key change, most other specs of the India-spec ADV motorcycle remains same as the international version.
The engine is the tried and tested 373.2cc single cylinder unit from the Duke. The motor is BS6 compliant, and makes the same amount of power and torque as the BS4 trim, at 44 Bhp-37 Nm. The motor is liquid cooled, fuel injected and runs a four valve head with twin overhead camshafts. An electric starter is standard, and there’s no kick start option.
The motor shares its 6 speed manual gearbox, and the gear ratios with the Duke 390, which means that it should be able to hit speeds in excess of 160 Kph, and manage the 0-100 Kph sprint in less than 6 seconds. It’s slightly heavier than the Duke 390 though, tipping scales at 158 kilograms. The extra weight is thanks to the taller front fairing, additional equipment in the form of a switchable traction control unit and a quickshifter for both up-shifts and downshifts.
Other major changes on the KTM Adventure 390 include the 19 inch front and 17 inch rear alloy wheels, shod with Metzeler Tourance tyres that are aimed at a mix of on-off riding, revised seat with the seat height now at a super tall (for India) 855 mm, a 1,430 mm wheelbase, a much more relaxed steering angle of 63.5 degrees and a 98 mm trail. All these changes are aimed to suit the tour-ready character of the KTM Adventure 390. Ground clearance is a hefty 200 mm while the fuel tank can hold 14.5 liters of petrol, which should give this motorcycle an effective range of about 300 kilometers. Expect to see this motorcycle hit the Indian touring circuit in a big way from early next year.
