Tata Motors’ Nexon electric SUV has just raced past the 2,000 unit sales mark in India. In a span of 10 months, the Nexon EV has notched up 2,200 unit sales despite witnessing tough market conditions including the lockdown imposed following the Corona Virus outbreak. While Tata Motors took 7 months to sell the first 1,000 units of the electric Nexon, the second thousand sales came about in just 3 months – between September and November 2020. This sales success makes the Nexon EV India’s best selling electric car, beating competition such as the MG eZS and the Hyundai Kona electric SUVs. The Tata Nexon EV is the most affordable electric SUV sold in India with a starting price under Rs. 14 lakh. Affordability is one big reason why the vehicle has done so well. Currently, the Tata Nexon commands 74 % of the electric SUV market in India – a significant achievement for a homegrown offering.

Mr. Shailesh Chandra, President – Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, had this to say about the Nexon EV’s fantastic sales numbers,

This is a moment of great pride for us and those working with us in our journey to accelerate the adoption of EVs in India. The Tata Nexon EV, since launch, has captured the imagination of the entire nation and has consistently led the way for the electric vehicle segment. Offering thrilling performance, connected drive experience with zero emissions and at an attractive pricing, the Nexon EV has found widespread acceptance among its customers. This growing demand is on the back of increased awareness, growing charging infrastructure, encouraging government incentives, breaking myths that surrounds EVs, and most importantly the undisputed benefits that it offers i.e. lower operating cost. Further, with the continued support from the government in terms of incentives such as benefits on registration and road tax, we hope that EVs will soon become the most desirable and a mainstream choice for the customers in India.

The Nexon EV is powered by a 30.2 kwh electric motor that makes 127 Bhp of peak power and 245 Nm of peak torque. It’s the fastest car that Tata Motors has ever launched in India, with a 0-100 Kph sprint time of just 9.9 seconds. While Tata Motors claims that the Nexon EV can do 312 Kms on a single charge, real world range varies with usage. Most owners of the Nexon report a range between 180-200 Kms during real world usage. Tata Motors offers a 1.6 lakh Kms warranty on the battery pack of the Nexon, which can be recharged from empty in about 8 hours using a regular 12V household socket. A fast charger takes just 2 hours to recharge the battery to 80 % of its capacity from empty. Ex-showroom prices of the Nexon EV start from Rs. 13.99 lakh.

The success of the Nexon EV is likely to pave the way for more electric vehicles from Tata Motors. The Tata Altroz EV has already been showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo as a concept, and the production version of this premium electric hatchback is expected in 2021. Tata Motors is also said to be working on an electric variant of the HBX (Hornbill) micro SUV. While the Tata HBX Hornbill will make its debut next year with petrol engines, the electric variant is likely to follow a year later.
