A few weeks ago, Skoda India officially announced that they were working on a sub-4-meter SUV for the Indian market. This is an extremely competitive segment, with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet dominating sales. Skoda even teased images of their upcoming sub-4-meter SUV during a recent press conference. We now have a new image that shows Volkswagen’s upcoming sub-4-meter SUV being tested in India.

The images have been shared by Bunny Punia on X (Twitter). The images were shared with him by one of his followers. It should be noted that a few years ago, Volkswagen had mentioned that they are planning to introduce a sub-4-meter SUV for India but they didn’t confirm anything or make any official announcements.
However, with Skoda entering this segment, we assume that Volkswagen would also make a similar move. If you look carefully, we see a heavily camouflaged SUV stuck in Mumbai traffic. We only get to see the rear of the car. It is clear that the test vehicle is an SUV as it looks taller than some of the other vehicles around it.
If you look carefully, you can see LED tail lamps, a high-mounted stop lamp, and roof rails. It is too soon to speak about the design as there is heavy camouflage on the vehicle. We assume that the upcoming Volkswagen sub-4-meter SUV will get a design similar to its siblings such as the Taigun and Tiguan.

This is going to be the third product from Volkswagen India to fall under their India 2.0 Strategy. Before this, Volkswagen launched Virtus and Taigun in the market. The SUV will use the same MQB A0 IN platform. This means one can expect a high degree of localization which would help them in pricing the SUV competitively. It would also reflect in lower cost of maintenance. It is also possible that the car spotted here is upcoming sub-4 meter SUV from Skoda as the design of the tail lamps reminds us of Kushaq.
Currently, the sub-4-meter segment is ruled by the likes of Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Tata Nexon. The other rivals in the segment include Mahindra XUV300 (facelift to be launched soon), Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger. The upcoming Volkswagen SUV will be powered by the same 1.0-liter, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine.
This engine is already offered with Taigun and Virtus, and it needs to be seen whether the manufacturer will detune the engine for efficiency. It will be offered with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission option.

As we already know, the Volkswagen group is handled by Skoda in India, and they are also working on their new sub-4-meter SUV (officially). We are expecting an official announcement related to the upcoming SUV from Volkswagen in the coming days. As Skoda was the first to announce their plans to launch the SUV officially, we expect them to launch the production version of the SUV first.
Skoda’s upcoming SUV will have a name that starts with K and ends with Q like all their other SUV models. Skoda is expected to launch the SUV in the first half of 2025, and Volkswagen’s version of the SUV will hit the market a few months after that Skoda.
