The cruiser motorcycle segment in India has witnessed some steady growth in the recent years. Bajaj has already rolled out a gazillion updates for its Avenger range of motorcycles and last year, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) came up with the Intruder 150, a mini-me version of the mighty Intruder M1800. However, in spite of its big bike looks, the Intruder 150 lags behind the Bajaj Avenger range of motorcycles in terms of popularity. Last month, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd sold 1,211 units of the Intruder 150. In comparison, Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) sold as many as 2,780 units of Avenger 180 and 2,683 units of Avenger 220.
With this, it becomes quite clear that the Intruder 150 has pretty much failed to leave a huge dent in the sales of the Avenger range of motorcycles. The Suzuki Intruder 150, which shares its underpinnings with the Gixxer 155, is powered by a 154.9cc engine that produces a maximum power of 14.6 bhp @ 8,000 rpm and a peak torque of 14 Nm @ 6,000 rpm. The engine comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the Bajaj Avenger 180, which shares its motor with the Pulsar 180 DTS-i, comes with a 180cc, single-cylinder motor that outputs 15.2 bhp at 8,500 rpm and a peak torque of 13.7 Nm at 6,500 RPM. Even this engine comes mated to a 5-speed transmission.
The Bajaj Avenger 220, on the other hand, is clearly more powerful than the remaining two motorcycles. It shares its motor with the Pulsar 220 DTS-i and comes with a 220cc, single-cylinder engine that offers a max power of 19 bhp @ 8,400 rpm along with a peak torque of 17.5 Nm @ 7,000 rpm. The engine comes mated to a five-speed transmission.
In terms of pricing, the Suzuki Intruder 150 is the costliest. It is on sale in a price range of Rs. 98,166 – 1.07 lakh (ex-showroom). The Bajaj Avenger 180, on the other hand, has an ex-showroom price of Rs 85,562. The Bajaj Avenger 220 range, which comprises of Street and Cruise variants, is on sale in at an ex-showroom price of Rs 95,923. Going by the latest sales figures, it’s quite clear that the great mix of attractive pricing and healthier specifications is working in favour of the Avenger range of cruiser motorcycles from Bajaj.
