Honda Scooters and Motorcycles India (HMSI) has just patented the CB 300R in India, a street fighter styled bike that the Japanese two-wheeler giant could launch in future as a Bajaj Dominar rival. What must be remembered is that a mere patenting is not a confirmation of launch. There have been many products that have been patented in India but their launches have never taken place.
Coming back to the Honda CB 300R, the motorcycle is a street fighter version of the CBR 300R, and gets fresh styling but uses the same mechanicals. It’s powered by a 286cc, four stroke single cylinder engine that’s liquid cooled and fuel injected. This engine gets a four valve head and twin overhead camshafts. It makes a peak power of 31 PS at 8,500 rpm while the peak torque of 27.5 Nm comes in at 7,000 rpm. A 6 speed manual gearbox is standard.
The motorcycle is already on sale in Thailand, where it was launched nearly 6 months ago. As for stylistic changes, the Honda CB 300R dumps the full fairing for a tank scoop. The fuel tank is revised and so is the headlamp, which is now a round unit. The clip-on handlebars make way for a single, taller handlebar that changes the riding ergonomics to a more upright position. The motorcycle also gets a different, stubby exhaust that’s positioned under the body.
As for other cycle parts, the alloy wheels get a new design while the front forks are upside down, 41 mm units. The suspension at the rear continues to be a monoshock unit though. Petal disc brakes are standard on both wheels and dual channel ABS is on offer. A sub-Rs. 2 lakh price point would make this motorcycle an interesting but pricier alternate to the Bajaj Dominar 400 in India. We don’t see Honda pricing this bike any lower as the Honda CBR 250R itself costs close to the Rs. 2 lakh mark for the ABS-equipped version. Honda does need a street fighter to challenge the likes of the Bajaj Dominar and the KTM Duke 250, and the CB 300R could just be the perfect bike.
