Hyundai has been offering massive discounts throughout the year on its mid-size hatchback, the Grand i10. Last month, in December, this hatchback carried offers worth more than 80,000 in the form of cash discount, exchange bonus and other freebies. This also made its effective price too close its younger sibling, the Santro.

This month though, Hyundai has withdrawn the hefty discounts but still offers benefits of upto Rs 45,000 on the petrol Grand i10. So, should you be picking the new kid on the block, the Santro or the good old Grand i10? Read on…

For reference, we have picked the Era versions of both the cars here. Do note that while Era is the base version for the Grand i10, it is one up from base for the Santro. As seen in the chart below, post the Rs 25,000 cash discount and Rs 20,000 exchange bonus, the effective ex-showroom price of the Grand i10 is just Rs 21,000 over the Santro’s. For this small premium however, you get to own a car from a higher segment.

Further, the Grand i10 comes with a larger engine that puts out more power and higher torque. In terms of numbers, the Grand i10’s engine offers 10% higher capacity, 20% more power and 15% higher torque. These are important figures when it comes to daily driving under all conditions, be it city usage or highway runs. A more powerful engine also comes handy when driving with a full load with the air-con working overtime in summers and needless to say, for the hidden enthusiast in you, the Grand i10 will be more satisfying.

Grand Vs Santro Cabin

The other factor that goes in favour of the Grand i10 are the dimensions. It is longer and wider than the Santro and also comes with wider and taller wheels of size 165/65 R14. A bigger vehicle always works well to massage the driver’s ego, right? Most importantly, the Era model of the Grand i10 comes with dual front Airbags as compared to just a driver side Airbag on the Santro. No wonder then, customers continue to pick the Grand i10 with sales in November and December totalling 21,072 units as compared to just 17,544 for the Santro in both the months combined together.

Hyundai must have realised that the bigger Grand i10 is stopping its new younger sibling, the Santro from hitting magical figures and the reason why discounts have been lowered in January. Even then, the Grand makes for a better buy as seen here. Will the Santro hit back this month in terms of sales? Your guess is as good as ours.
