With the implementation of the stricter BS6 emission norms less than a year away, Maruti Suzuki has silently slipped the updated Swift and WagonR in the market. India’s largest car maker has launched the BS6 variants of the WagonR and the Swift. Maruti launched the all-new Swift last year in the Indian market while the all-new WagonR was launched earlier this year.

It should be noted that only the petrol engine of the Swift has been upgraded to the emission norms while the WagonR is only available with the petrol engine options in the market. The WagonR is offered with two engine options – 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre but only the 1.2-litre version has been updated.

That’s not all, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has also received the AIS-145 Safety Norm compliance, which equips with better crash protection. Features like dual-airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder and speed warning system is now standard with all the variants of the car. With the changes, the price of the Swift has also increased by Rs 15,000. The base model of the Swift is now priced at Rs 5.14 lakh, ex-showroom while the top-end ZDI AGS is priced at Rs 8.89 lakh.

The 1.2-litre, four-cylinder engine available with the Swift remains identical when it comes to the power output. The engine produces the same 83 PS and 113 Nm as before. Even the fuel efficiency figure of 22 km/l remains the same. Maruti Suzuki earlier announced that they will phase out the diesel engines from the market when the BS6 norms kick in. This is why the diesel variants have not been upgraded to the new pollution norms.

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR, which was launched earlier this year is now BS6 compliant. Only the 1.2-litre engine powered WagonR has been launched with the new emission compliance and now the price starts at Rs 4.89 lakh for the base version while the top-end version is priced at Rs 5.7 lakh. The price of the WagonR 1.0-litre, which remain powered by a BS4 engine, has also increased by about Rs 14,000. The base model of the WagonR is now priced at Rs 4.34 lakh. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR was launched at an introductory price and it has already become a best-selling car in the segment.

Earlier, Maruti Suzuki Baleno became the first car from the manufacturer to get the BS6 compliant engine. Soon, the manufacturer is expected to launch the BS6 versions of the Ertiga and the Ciaz in the market. Suzuki and Toyota have also joined hands to launch new products and in the future, Toyota will provide hybrid technology to power the Maruti Suzuki cars in India.
