Royal Enfield motorcycles with modified exhausts BUSTED: Exhausts removed by cops

$

If you have a Royal Enfield motorcycle with a noisy, modified exhaust, you could be in the radar of Hyderabad cops, who are aggressively busting riders running motorcycles with modified exhausts. While the Hyderabad Traffic Police officials are fining such riders, and submitting their details to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) for further action, cops in Ramagundam, a city in Telangana, are going a step ahead. They’re marching riders of modified Royal Enfields to police stations, calling in mechanics, and getting the exhausts removed. The Ramagundam and Hyderabad police officials seem to differ on the way the drive is being carried out against Royal Enfield motorcycles with modified exhausts.

Hyderabad Royal Enfield Loud Exhaust Ban

While the cops at Ramagundam are rmeoving exhausts, the ones at Hyderabad state that they don’t have the power to actually remove the exhaust, and can only fine bikers and report them to the RTA. Here is what Ramagundam traffic circle inspector Ramesh Babu had to say,

The bikers are resorting to sound pollution with modified silencers. We conducted a special drive in Ramagundam town in Mancherial district today. We focused on Royal Enfield and Yamaha vehicles with modified silencers making a huge noise. We caught the bikers and took them to the police station along with the vehicles. Motorbike mechanics engaged by us removed the silencers. Sound pollution is a big menace. We have done the special drive in view of disturbances caused to other motorists and the general public. We will not tolerate any kind of actions that increase sound pollution.

Talking a slightly different stance, a Hyderabad police official said,

Police have no right to remove silencers. In Hyderabad, we are testing (decibels) sound pollution using meters and imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 on violators. We can send vehicles for vehicle check report in case of violations. There are prescribed guidelines under MV Act and PCB rules.

The exhaust is the most commonly modified part on Royal Enfield motorcycles. Owners swap the factory fitted units, which have muted thumps with aftermarket units that are much louder. While some aftermarket exhausts are mild and muted enough not to attract the attention of police officials, many other exhausts are very loud. These exhausts startle fellow road users and contribute to the already high ambient noise levels across most Indian cities to the point that they are now considered a menace. Across India, law enforcement agencies are cracking down on Royal Enfield motorcycles fitted with loud aftermarket exhausts.

10 features the MG Hector SUV has that the Tata Harrier does NOT!

$

0

The Tata Harrier has been having a pretty good time since its launch and is the best selling car in the segment right now. However, MG plans to spoil the party for Tata by launching the Hector SUV next month. While the Harrier itself is a brilliant SUV and comes with numerous useful features, the Hector is nowhere behind in any aspect. If nothing, the Hector leads over the Harrier in certain areas. Here is a list of 10 such aspects where the MG Hector offers better than the Tata Harrier.

10.8-inch infotainment with AI

Mg Hector Dashboard

MG has fitted the Hector with a best in class 10.8 inch portrait style mounted touch screen. This infotainment system is Artificial Intelligence-powered and comes with an eSIM that keeps the vehicle connected to the Internet all the time. This allows the vehicle to stream music, get system updates and also track the vehicle and control it remotely through a smartphone. Further, the AI gives certain impressive features to the infotainment like active voice control among other 50 plus connected features.

Hybrid engine option: better fuel efficiency

Mg Hector

MG is leaving no stone unturned for their debut vehicle in India. The Hector will be the first vehicle in its segment to get a 48V mild hybrid system. MG claims that this system will provide extra torque assistance of up to 20 Nm whenever required. It will work together with functions like engine auto start-stop, regenerative braking and e-boost. All of this would reduce the emissions by 12 per cent and offers a better driving experience. The hybrid tech will be present with the petrol engine which is a 1.5-litre unit churning out 143 PS and 250 Nm and comes paired with a 6-speed manual box.

Larger in size

Harrier Vs Hector

Plain and simple, the MG Hector is larger in size the Harrier. The only dimensional factor where Harrier leaves the Hector behind is in width. Talking about the MG Hector, it measures 4,655×1,835×1,760 mm (LXWXH) and has a ground clearance of 192 mm. The Tata Harrier, on the other hand, measures 4,598×1,894×1,706 mm (LXWXH) and has a ground clearance of 205 mm.

Larger wheelbase and more interior space

Mg Hector Featured 3

Not only is the MG Hector much larger than the Tata Harrier, but it also has a larger wheelbase than the latter. The Hector has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm whereas the Tata Harrier has a wheelbase of 2741 mm. These figures have a marginal difference between them but still, the Hector has a 9mm longer wheelbase. While this would not make a hell lot of difference in the interior space, the overall larger dimension of the Hector hints towards more cabin space for sure.

More powerful diesel engine

Mg Hector Rear

The MG Hector and the Tata Harrier both share the same diesel engine, which is a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre unit. However, on the Hector, this engine generates a maximum of 170 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. On the other hand, Tata detuned the engine for use on Harrier in order to achieve better fuel efficiency. Therefore, it churns out 140 PS of power along with 350 Nm of torque on the Harrier.

Large Panoramic sunroof

Mg Hector Sunroof

Of late, sunroofs on cars has become the latest fad in India. More and more people now want a car equipped with sunroof for the open air feel it gives. The Tata Harrier, sadly, misses out on this and does not come with a sunroof, even as an option. However, MG has equipped the Hector with a massive panoramic sunroof which lifts up its appeal by quite a margin. The panoramic sunroof on the Hector will be the biggest seen in this price range yet.

Bigger boot space

Mg Hector

With the large body it comes with, the MG Hector then naturally has a bigger boot space than the Tata Harrier. The Tata Harrier comes with a boot space of 425 litres, which is decent if not good. However, the Hector blows things out of proportion with its 587 litres of boot space. MG has planned to launch a 7 seater version of the Hector which will make use of all that space behind the second row by placing one more row of seats. For now, the 5-seater Hector has one humongous boot.

8 colour ambient lightning

Mg Hector Front

This again is a feature usually found in high-end cars. The Hector will be the first car in this price range to offer ambient lighting without up to eight different colour options. This means that the owners can select up to eight different preset colours for the ambient lighting according to their mood. It makes the cabin feel very upmarket and from a class higher above.

Powered tailgate

Mg Hector Still 1

A powered tailgate is a feature that more expensive and high-end cars come with. MG has equipped the Hector with a powered tailgate for which it even released a special TVC with its brand Ambassador Benedict Cumberbatch. While many may say that it is just a feature for number count, a powered tailgate does prove to be useful in certain condition like when you are carrying heavy luggage. It may not be a deciding factor but when splurging nearly 15 lakhs on a vehicle, having a few extras which give you a taste of higher life are certainly welcome.

360-degree camera

Mg Hector Infotainment

Another striking feature that the MG Hector has but the Tata Harrier does not have is a 360-degree camera. This feature gives a bird’s eye view of the car’s surroundings on the infotainment system and one can see all around the car at once. Coupled with the large infotainment system of the Hector, this feature becomes more useful. Especially for a large vehicle like the Hector, a 360-degree camera can act as a boon in crowded city driving.

$

Your budget is limited, about Rs 2 lakh. You are first-time buyer, and don’t want to be stuck with car that’s troublesome. Even with such narrow requirements, if you search for cars on any of the major used car sites, you are likely to end up with more than 200 options on each site. And you’ll find cars at all sorts of prices – from Rs 75,000 to Rs. 200,000. Are the more expensive options better for you? How do you build your shortlist?

Cartoq True Price Featured

Used car websites do little to help except give you multiple filters. Then it is up to you to figure out the best deals. But there is another solution now.
We could use the Cartoq TRUE PRICE to identify the best deals. The Cartoq Data Science team has built a Machine Learning model that estimates the TRUE PRICE of a used car, after accounting for all sorts of variables – brand, model, age, mileage, car type.

With all factors accounted for, it predicts the TRUE PRICE, which then becomes the basis of comparing across cars. The best deals are those where listed price is lower than the TRUE PRICE. So we scan through the car listing across major used car sites, compute their TRUE PRICE, and identify the best deals for you. The shortlist for this article was based on the analysis we ran on May 16, 2019, so by the time you read this article, there is a good chance that the specific car may no longer be available.

But the list still provides some useful pointers even if these specific cars are not available to you [all these deals are available in Delhi NCR].

Hyundai cars lose value faster than Maruti Suzuki cars, which means:
• There are good deals to be had and
• A bit of effort and luck should get you a good i10 – a clear step-up over Altos and EONs – within your budget.

Let’s dive into our top recommendations.

Recommendation #1: Hyundai Eon 1.0 Era Plus

Hyundai Eon Used 1

Year: 2016 / Mileage: 25,000 / Asking Price: Rs. 190,000 / OP: Rs. 435,000

Why buy: This stylish alternative to Alto tops the list. While the asking price of Rs 1.9 lakh is near the top-end of your budget, the car with 25,000 km has the fewest kilometers clocked of any cars on this list. And that should mean hassle-free ownership for a quite a while.

Buy it here

Recommendation #2: Hyundai i10 Magna 1.2 Kappa II

Hyundai I10 Used

Year: 2012 / Mileage: 37,000 / Asking Price: Rs. 140,000 / OP: Rs. 462,000

Why buy: The No. 2 entry on this list, the i10 Magna represent a definite step-up from the entry level buys [Maruti Suzuki Alto, Hyundai Eon]—you get more space, more style, more power, more features and better build. And yet it costs only 1.4 lakh for a under-40,000 km specimen—what’s not to like!

Buy it here

Recommendation #3: Maruti Suzuki WagonR VXi CNG

Maruti Wagonr Cng Used

Year: 2010 / Mileage: 49,000 / Asking Price: Rs. 195,000 / OP: Rs. 494,000

Why buy: If you are willing to spend your entire budget, then the 3rd entry on the list, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, is hard to beat. The hugely successful Wagon R is the most spacious car in its class and comes with low ownership cost. The latter is further enhanced by the fact that this one runs on CNG too.

Buy it here

Recommendation #4: Hyundai i10 Magna IRDE II

Hyundai I10 Used 2

Year: 2014 / Mileage: 40,000 / Asking Price: Rs. 190,000 / OP: Rs. 462,000

Why buy: A slightly newer—by two years—alternative to the No 2 car on the list, this i10 easily trumps Altos and Eon on everything from space to power to comfort.

Buy it here

Recommendation #5: Hyundai Eon Era Plus

Hyundai Eon Used 2

Year: 2014 / Mileage: 38,000 / Asking Price: Rs. 150,000 / OP: Rs. 385,562

Why Buy: A significantly cheaper—by Rs. 40,000—alternative to the No 1 car on the list, this Eon is couple of years older with about 13,000 km more than the list topper. However, it should still be good for another 30,000-40,000 km. And you get to save forty grands.

Buy it here

In Summary

The list captures compelling buys—both at top end of your budget as well as those well within. There are plenty of Eons as well as i10s on the used car market— the key is finding one with the right compromise between usage and price.

Bajaj Auto announces launch timeline for Husqvarna Vitpilen & Svartpilen 401 retro motorcycles

$

0

Bajaj Auto has just announced that the Husqvarna range of retro-modern motorcycles will be launched in India during this year’s festive season. Both motorcycles have been spied testing in India multiple times with specific changes to suit the market here.

Husqvarna Vitpilen 1

When quizzed by MoneyControl about the two wheeler giant’s plans for 2019, Rakesh Sharma, chief commercial officer, Bajaj Auto, had this to say,

The market will see a lot of action beginning June. We already had a couple of introductions in the last two months. There has been an upgrade to the Dominar and the Avenger. Across the spectrum over the next 3-4 months the market will see 3-4 launches. These will be on smart innovations but not revolutionary. These will become the primary drivers of growth. We are on track with Husqvarna bikes and they will be launched in the middle of the year. It could be September–November period because that’s also when the festival sales peak. We have to make sure it has an impact. We are on track with that.

The Husqvarna Vitpilen and Svaartpilen 401 will sit on the KTM Duke 390’s platform but will have stylistic and ergonomic changes. In terms of looks, both motorcycles will be totally different from the KTM Duke 390. While the Vitpilen 401 will have a cafe racer stance with clip on handlebars and rear-set foot pegs, the Svartpilen 401 will have a Scrambler design with a high-set handlebar and forward biased footpegs to give the rider a more upright, relaxed stance.

Husqvarna Svartpilen 4

Both bikes will use the 373cc, four stroke single cylinder engine borrowed from the KTM Duke 390. This liquid cooled, fuel injected motor that runs a four valve head and twin overhead camshafts, will make 44 Bhp of peak power and 37 Nm of peak torque. A 6 speed manual gearbox with a slipper clutch will be standard with this engine.

Both motorcycles will get identical suspension units but the tunes of the suspension is likely to vary. Upside down front forks and a monoshock rear shock absorber will be the suspension bits with the Svartpilen likely to get higher travel to handle off road bits. Also, the Svartpilen is likely to get tyres with more aggressive tread for on-off road usage. Both motorcycles are likely to be built at the KTM factory that Bajaj Auto runs in Chakan. Both bike will have extensive localization to keep costs low, and are likely to undercut the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 an Continental GT 650 in terms of pricing.

Toyota Innova Crysta vs Hyundai Creta Automatics in a classic drag race

Toyota Innova Crysta is the best-selling MPV in the segment and same is the case with Hyundai Creta. The Creta is often appreciated for its performance in its segment but the Toyota Innova Crysta itself is a very powerful vehicle. Here is a drag race between both the cars that shows which one is quicker off the mark.

Toyota Innova Crysta Automatic Vs Hyundai Creta Automatic

Both Toyota Innova Crysta and the Hyundai Creta are immensely popular in their respective segments in the Indian market. The Hyundai Creta used in the video gets powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 128 PS and 260 Nm of peak torque. It gets a 6-speed conventional automatic transmission in place. The Toyota Innova Crysta gets powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 174 PS and peak torque of 360 Nm. It also gets a 6-speed automatic transmission in place.

Even though the Toyota Innova is more powerful than the Hyundai Creta on the specification sheet, the weight of the Innova Crysta is also much higher. One thing that is different in both the vehicles is the drivetrain setup. The Hyundai Creta gets a Front Wheel Drive (FWD) set-up while the Toyota Innova Crysta gets a Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) set-up.

Both the vehicles first start from a standstill and in the first run, the Innova Crysta can be seen gaining the lead soon after the race starts. The Innova Crysta maintains the lead all through the lead and even extends the lead over the distance. The Innova Crysta can be seen winning the race quite comfortably at the end. The drag race done by Deep C 6 was repeated to ensure that the results remain the same. However, even in the second run, the Innova Crysta beats the Hyundai Creta by a big margin.

Later part of the video shows both the vehicles doing a rolling start at 30 km/h for the drag race. In the first attempt, the Toyota Innova Crysta wins hands down even with the rolling start. However, in the second run, the Creta comes out to be the winner. It is quite possible that the Innova Crysta driver missed something or did something wrong, which let the Hyundai Creta pass and win the race.

Innova Creta

Both the cars get the 6-speed conventional transmission. With the rising popularity of automatic transmissions in India, we are getting to see more automatic cars in the market in recent times. In the future, we may see the popularity of the automatic transmission only growing with time. The Toyota Innova Crysta is a 7-seater car while the Hyundai Creta is a 5-seater vehicle. There is no comparison between the two as such in the market and the buyers have clear preferences when it comes to these two cars.

10 FORGOTTEN Jawa & Yezdi motorcycles of India

$
0
0

The Jawa name made a comeback last year in a modern avatar. However, the first licensed Jawa bikes were sold starting from 1960 by Ideal Jawa before the brand’s name was changed to Yezdi in 1973. In spite of being out of production for nearly 22 years, Jawa and Yezdi bikes are still popular among motorcycle enthusiasts in India. At that time, they were sold under the catchphrase, ‘Forever Bike Forever Value’. Here is a look at 10 Forgotten Yezdi and Jawa models.

Jawa 250 Type A

Among the various Jawa bikes sold in India, the Type 353/04 was the first one to come here. The bike brought in a new design language to the country which is iconic to even this day. The Czech motorcycle was powered by a 249 cc two-stroke, air-cooled engine that churned out 12 hp @ 4,750 rpm. The engine was mated to a 4-speed transmission. In India, it was called the Jawa 250 Type A and is one of the most sought-after vintage bikes among collectors in India. Well kept or well-restored examples hold great value and often fetch very good prices at auctions.

Yezdi Roadking

The Yezdi Roadking was a rival of the Royal Enfield Bullet in the 90s and became very popular back in the day. The Roadking was powered by a 248.5-cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine that churned out 16 Bhp of power along with 24 Nm of torque. Compared to the Royal Enfield Bullet, it was a better performer and had faster acceleration thanks to its low weight of 140 kilos.

Yezdi Oilking

The Oilking, as its name suggests, was a Roadking with an oil pump. Because its oil pump used to fail quite often, therefore people generally would run this bike without any oil in the oil tank at all. The Jawa Oilking was powered by a near 250-cc engine which was present on the Roadking as well. This engine was mated to a 4-speed gearbox and churned out 16 Bhp of power and 24 Nm of torque.

Yezdi Monarch

The Monarch was built on the chassis of the Yezdi 175 but drew power from the same engine as the Roadking. The Monarch’s engine produced 16 Bhp and 24 Nm of torque and was mated to a 4-speed gearbox. Many regarded the Yezdi Monarch as an upgraded 175 and, with its 136 kg weight, it was rather brisk off the line as well, which made it appealing to riders.

Yezdi Classic

The Yezdi Classic was a cruiser motorcycle from Ideal Jawa that competed with the Bullet, with its ability to cruise for long distances. It’s old school design still looks appealing today and it was the first bike marketed by Ideal Jawa under the slogan ‘Forever Bike, Forever Value’. The Classic was powered by a near 250-cc single-cylinder two-stroke petrol engine that produced 13 Bhp and 20 Nm of torque. A well-restored Classic these days can fetch upwards of Rs. 1 lakh with ease.

Yezdi Classic CL-II

The Classic CL-II was actually a better and upgraded version of the Jawa Roadking. It was powered by a 248.5-cc engine that produced 13 Bhp of power and 20 Nm of torque. It was quite a light bike as it weighed just 131 kg. This allowed for a claimed 0-60 km/h time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 110 km/h.

Yezdi 175

The Yezdi 175, as its name implies, was powered by a 175-cc single-cylinder 2-stroke engine that produced 9.5 bhp at 5,500 rpm and 14.27 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The Yezdi 175 had a claimed top speed of 95 km/h. The peppy fun-to-ride Yezdi 175 was a more affordable offering compared to its larger 250 siblings and commands a hefty price tag in the used motorcycle market today.

Yezdi 60

The Yezdi 60 was targeted at teenagers and women riders and had a step-through design for enhanced convenience. The mini-bike from Jawa was launched here as a successor to the Jawa 50. This interesting looking bike was powered by a 60-cc two-stroke, air-cooled engine that produced a mere 3.6 bhp of power at 6000 rpm and the engine was mated to a 3-speed gearbox.

Yezdi 350

The Yezdi 350 was often referred to as the poor man’s Yamaha RD 350 (Rajdoot). The Yezdi 350 actually did not challenge the Yamaha RD 350 as it was quite less powerful than the Japanese icon. However, it had a very peppy 2-stroke engine which made it fun-to-ride. Despite being cheaper than the Yamaha bike, it did not turn out to be a big seller and hence commands a heavy price tag in the used motorcycle market today.

Yezdi Deluxe

Last in the line is the Yezdi Delux, which is a popular model among collectors today. The Yezdi Delux shared its engine along with a lot of other components with the Jawa Classic and Roadking models. This included the suspension and braking set-up among others. The 248.5-cc engine on this motorcycle churned out a good 13 Bhp of power and 20 Nm of torque. It was a pretty lightweight bike with just 131 kgs of mass on it and hence was quick bike off the line. The Deluxe is a popular model among collectors today.

North India’s first bagged Honda Civic is here: Looks HOT! [Video]

$

0

The older generation Honda Civic is one of the most popular cars in the mod circuits of India. Its cool looks are among the most important factor for its popularity apart from its low slung stance. However, another major factor is the availability of mod parts and body kits of the Civic globally as it was quite famous across the world. In India, the southern region is full of scorching hot mods of the Civics including several bagged ones. The video below by Beard Bikerr shows north India’s first bagged custom that has been customised fully. Take a look at the video before we get to the other details of the car.

The Honda Civic features here looks amazing and there is absolutely no doubt about it. According to the owner of this car, the total mod cost of this Civic was around Rs. 8 lakhs. That’s quite a sum for sure but the car looks the part. It has been painted in a special blue paint that reflects light differently based on the light conditions around it. This paint job alone set back the owner by around Rs. 50,000. Another striking modification done on it are those gorgeous scissor doors, which instantly label it as one hot mod job. These scissor doors and their installations cost around Rs. 50,000 again. Let’s now chckout the other changes made on the car which drive the cost of the car so high up.

Civic Mod 1

This Civic has been fitted with a Mugen RR aftermarket Kit which was imported from Thailand. The front bumper along with the rear bumper are new units and are lower than on the stock car. The body kit also adds side skirts and a subtle boot spoiler that looks quite good. The body kit looks even better paired with the blue paint sade this car now sports.

Civic Mod 3

Next major modification on this civic was its suspension. The car now sports a bagged suspension which translates into air suspension in simpler terms. The car can be adjusted to either kiss the ground or ride at a normal level at just the push of a button. This whole suspension setup set back the owner by another Rs. 1.8 lakhs.

Civic Mod 2

The car now runs on gorgeous looking multispoke rims by Momo which are shod on with low profile tires. These rims came for around Rs. 65,000. The brake callipers have been painted red to add a dash of sportiness to the car. The audio system by Rockford Fosgate on this car is for around Rs. 1.5 lakhs. The interiors of the cars are also modified including the seat and other panels.  All in all, this bagged Honda Civic with scissor doors looks spectacular to say the least.

And you’ll find cars at all sorts of prices – from Rs 200,000 to Rs. 500,000. Are the more expensive options better for you? How do you build your shortlist?

Used car websites do little to help except give you multiple filters. Then it is up to you to figure out the best deals. But there is another solution now. Use the Cartoq TRUE PRICE to identify the best deals. That TRUE PRICE then becomes the basis of comparing across cars, with varying specifications and even prices. The best deals are those where the listed price is lower than the TRUE PRICE. To know the methodology in detail, read this. So we scanned our database of car listings across the major used car sites, and identified the best deals in Bengaluru for small cars with a budget of up to Rs 5 lakh.

The shortlist for this article was based on the analysis we ran on May 17, 2019, so by the time you read this article, there is a good chance that the specific car may no longer be available.

But the list still provides some useful pointers even if these specific cars are not available to you [all these deals are available in Bengaluru].

Ford has had stronger sales in the South which means there are more Fords on the used car market. Plus, Ford cars lose value faster than Maruti Suzuki or Hyundai cars, which means:
• There are good deals to be had if you train your guns at Ford and
• A bit of effort and luck should get you an old but sparingly used Ford diesel well within your budget.

You will find one astonishing fact as you go through our recommended list. Read on.

Recommendation #1: Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta 1.2

Maruti Baleno Used 1

Year: 2016 / Mileage: 41,452 / Asking Price: Rs. 498,684 / OP: Rs. 763,000

Why Buy: The best-selling premium hatchback tops our list too. This gorgeous red 2016 Baleno has done 41,000 km and so should be good for another 4-5 years. Its spacious, fun-to-drive and fuel efficient making it an attractive buy at discount of nearly 40 percent to a new purchase.

Buy it here

Recommendation #2: Ford Figo Duratec Titanium 1.2

Ford Figo Used 1

Year: 2014 Mileage: 22,000 Asking Price: Rs. 284,200 OP: Rs. 546,000

Why Buy: Ford Figo of the 2014 vintage was a well-built car that was fun-to-drive as well. However, the petrol version drinks more fuel than others in its class. So why is this on our list? Well the negatives have been factored in the asking price—it has done only 22,000 km and yet the asking price is just Rs 2.84 lakh. That leaves you with more than enough cash from your budget of Rs 5 lakh to keep feeding it for quite some time. It’s also a perfect buy as second car that won’t be doing too many miles.

Buy it here

Recommendation #3: Ford Figo 1.4 TDCi Titanium

Ford Figo Used 2

Year: 2014 Mileage: 25,000 Asking Price: Rs. 425,000 OP: Rs. 768,000

Why Buy: If the guzzler above does not fit with your sensibilities, then you have its thrifty diesel cousin at third spot on the list. It has just 25,000 km on the odo which should ensure trouble-free ownership for another 5 years. At Rs 4.25 lakh, its at a discount of 45 percent to the new car price and would leave you with some cash to spare.

Buy it here

Recommendation #4: Hyundai Grand i10 Sportz Celebration Edition

Year: 2016 Mileage: 3,000 Asking Price: Rs. 470,000 OP: Rs. 706,000

Why Buy: We are not sure about the 3,000 km-over-3 years claim…but if it’s true, then you have a very good car at a very good price. Catch hold of a good mechanic when you go inspecting.

Buy it here

Recommendation #5: Ford Figo 1.4 TDCi Titanium

Ford Figo Used 3

Year: 2012 Mileage: 23,652 Asking Price: Rs. 277,095 OP: Rs. 768,000

Why Buy: The two-year older version of number 3 entry is available for Rs 1.5 lakh less. The good bit is that though it is older, it still has clocked only 23,000 km—so mechanically everything should be fine.

Minister’s wife in a Toyota Fortuner SUV gets into an argument when asked to pay toll [Video]

The wife of an Andhra Pradesh minister got into an argument with the employees at a toll plaza, and initially refused to pay toll. Eventually, she had to relent and pay up when the toll plaza employees stood their ground, and did not allow her Toyota Fortuner SUV to pass without paying toll. P. Venkata Kumari, the wife of Andhra Pradesh state’s civil supplies minister, Prathipati Pulla Rao, was traveling from Hyderabad to Guntur in her personal Toyota Fortuner SUV when the incident happened at Madgulapalli toll plaza. The toll sought from her was Rs. 56. Ms. Kumari is a politician herself, actively working for the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh. The entire incident was captured on video that has now gone viral. Here, check it out.

As the video indicates, the minister’s wife is seem arguing with the toll plaza employees, one of whom stands his ground and clearly tells the minister’s wife that the Toyota Fortuner will not be allowed to pass without toll. The conversation happens in Telugu, and the toll plaza employee is also seen questioning the minister’s wife about the validity of the ‘MLA’ sticker on the Toyota Fortuner that she was traveling in. According to the toll plaza employee, the MLA sticker’s validity had expired in December 2018.

Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are among a select bunch of government functionaries who are exempted from paying toll while using roads in most states of India. However, this exemption applies only if the MLA is personally traveling in the vehicle that’s seeking an exemption from toll. Also, this exemption is only for the official vehicle of the MLA, which bears a valid sticker/insignia explaining the status of the person traveling in it.

Toyota Fortuner Minister Toll Featured

Talking to reporters later in Guntur, the minister’s wife, had this to say,

The election results in Andhra Pradesh have yet been declared. My husband is still a minister and an MLA. How can the toll plaza staff obstruct his car?

This is not the first occasion when politicians in India have gotten into arguments with toll plaza staff over payment of toll. There have been cases of politicians and their escorts brandishing weapons at toll plaza employees when asked to pay up for using a toll road. There have also been incidents of violence by politicians at toll plazas regarding the payment of toll. The presence of CCTV at most toll plazas result in such incidents coming to light, and causing outrage among citizenry.

Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 modified into a beautiful Tracker

The Royal Enfield 650 twins have turned out to be a success as they were expected to. The Interceptor is the better selling among the twins and that’s because it targets a wider audience than the Continental GT 650. The popularity of the 650 twins is not restricted to only India but the bikes are making a name for themselves in the international markets too. They have become quite a favourite of custom builders and modifiers internationally due to their relatively affordable prices, retro looks and great mod potential. The video below by 8080 Cafe Korat 8080 KRT shows us another beautifully modified Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 from Thailand.

The bike here gets a lot of changes to turn it into more of a tracker than a retro cruiser.  We have seen a lot of scrambler styled motorcycles in past and this also joins the list as a beautifully done example. The owner of this bike is from Thailand and goes by the name of Teerapon Madeaw Sirirungrueangkrai. He owns a few other modified bikes too and he recently acquired the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, which he then turned into a tracker.

59802087 200507224253092 1210343178499333972 N

The bike now rides on 19-inch rims at the front and 17 inches at rear shod on with aftermarket tires. The headlamp unit of the bike has been replaced with a new aftermarket unit while the front forks have been given rubber covers. The twin pipe stock exhaust units have been taken off and replaced with a freeflow aftermarket piece that saves weight and gives a slight bump to the power as well.

60148142 2293143760928572 6306631878451346683 N

The saddle is now a single piece ribbed unit but has space for a pillion rider too. The rear grab handle has been removed along with the tail lamp and indicators. The bike now gets a tiny retro styled stop light that marks the end of the short tail since now there is no rear fender mounted on the bike. The tank has been painted white and gets yellow and red stripes while a new round plate has been added on the side with a number 3 readout. The bike now looks pretty good without being modified too much.

Re Mod Feature

Talking about the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, the bike is powered by a 649 cc, parallel-twin, air-oil cooled engine that generates a maximum power of 47 Bhp and peak torque of 52 Nm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed transmission with a slipper clutch and disc brakes on both the wheels. It also gets dual channel ABS as standard. The bike is built upon a new double cradle frame while the engine is also a new unit. The Interceptor 650, along with its twin Continental GT 650, is the most advanced as well as the most powerful bike that the company has built to date.

The little master was never seen batting an eyelid in front of the famed West Indies pace attacks and battered them straight out. In 2014, Gavaskar was put in charge of the BCCI as its president by the Supreme Court to oversee the 7th season of the Indian Premier League. Talking about his choice of wheels, Sunil Gavaskar goes for his daily commute is an E 30 BMW 5 series.

Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev was the man in charge when India first lifted the World Cup in 1983. The memory of Dev running to catch was a moment that not only changed India’s outlook towards cricket, but it also bought about a change in the way the world viewed India in the realm of cricket. In the same World Cup, Kapil smashed 175 of 138 balls against Zimbabwe, to help India to an almost unthinkable win after his side were reduced to 78 for seven. Kapil Dev also held the world record for the most number of wickets taken by a bowler in tests at 434, which was broken by Courtney Walsh in 2000.
Kapil Dev’s ride of choice is Porsche’s only four-door sedan currently on sale – the Panamera. Kapil owns a first-gen Porsche Panamera. Prices for the current Panamera start at Rs 1.16 crore.

Mohammed Azharuddin

Mohammed Azharuddin was one of India’s most popular and successful players who ended was also among the best when it came to leading the national side. His elegant strokes and upturned collar captured the imagination of a nation. However, the adoration turned into disbelief and anger when he implicated in the infamous match-fixing scandal of 2000 and banned for life from Cricket. It was only at age 49, with his playing days long behind him was Azhar able to get his ban overturned by the Andhra Pradesh High Court. The former Indian captain was also a member of Parliament from 2009 to 2014.

Azhar has been seen in three different cars over the year. These include the BMW 5-Series sedan and 650i coupe along with a Honda CR-V.

Sachin Tendulkar

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar is widely regarded as THE GOD of cricket. In his long carrer spanning 24 years, 200 tests and 463 One Day Internationals, he is the first batsman to score 100 centuries overall. Sachin is also the record holder for the most number of runs in a career for both ODIs and Tests. He was also the first batsman to score a double hundred in ODIs. Sachin is a known automotive enthusiast and a good collection of cars. His collection includes a Nissan GT-R, multiple BMWs including an i8 supercar and the M5, along with a Mercedes C63 AMG and a Porsche Boxster sports car among others. He once owned a Ferrari 360 Modena which was gifted to him by Ferrari and handed over by Michael Schumacher himself.

Saurav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly, Dada, the king of the off-side, was the man in charge when India actually started believing again that they could win matches both at home and abroad. Best known for antagonizing and beating Steve Waugh’s Aussies in an amazing 2-1 series victory in 2001, Ganguly also lead India to finals of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa,

Sourav Ganguly grew up in a massive home in Kolkata alongside his extended family. The palatial home has a fleet of around 32 cars in the garages, though Dada himself is mostly seen in four rides – Mercedes CLK, C-Class Convertible, Ford Endeavour and a Honda City ZX.

Rahul Dravid

Rahul ‘The Wall’ Dravid is a reflection of everything good that Indian cricket has to offer. He was the captain of the Indian cricket team after the Greg Chappell and Sourav Ganguly controversy. Rahul Dravid is still a big figure in the Indian cricket scene and the head coach of the Indian ‘A’ team as well as the under 19 team. Coming to his choice of cars, Dravid owns a BMW 5 series and an Audi Q5 SUV.

Anil Kumble

2002 Ford Endeavour A.k.a Everest

Anil Kumble is again one of the biggest names in the cricket history, a term we have awarded to many in this list. But then, all those mentioned here have been successful cricketers and team captain as well so they kind of deserve the ‘biggest’ and ‘best’ tag. Coming to Anil Kumble, he’s the only Indian and the second man in the world to take all 10 wickets in a game of Test cricket. A very respected man in the world of cricket, Kumble is known for his humble nature. As for his set of wheels, the famed spinner owns several cars including an older-gen Ford Endeavour SUV and a Mercedes E-Class.

Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag is a name that once evoked terror among bowlers worldwide. He was not known for being a regular big scorer but rather for his hits so devastating that the bowlers lost their form for the rest of the match. Sehwag was part of India’s 2011 World Cup winning squad and is the only batsman other than Chris Gayle to score a triple century in Tests and a double century in ODIs. The Sultan of Najafgarh owns a good collection of cars, though the one he is most often spotted in is a Bentley Continental Fly which is the four-door saloon version of the Continental GT.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

The list started off with the current captain but ends with the previous skipper, MS Dhoni. The Captain cool needs no introduction and has taken Indian cricket to new heights. The most successful Indian cricket team captain till date, Dhoni is also a massive petrolhead and has an eye-popping collection of both cars and bikes. Some of the big names in his garage include the Hummer H2, a fully custom Mahindra Scorpio, GMC Sierra, Land Rover Freelander 2, Audi Q7 and the Mitsubishi Pajero SFX. His collection also includes humbler vehicles like the Toyota Corolla and the Maruti SX4.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250: Walkaround video surfaces ahead of launch today

Suzuki has put together a sharp-looking, affordable sportsbike for India and other emerging markets of the world. Called the Gixxer 250 SF, the fully faired sportsbike will be launched in India later today, and a walkaround video of the motorcycle reveals all. The Gixxer 250 will be Suzuki’s Yamaha Fazer 250 challenger. The likes of the Honda CBR 250R and the KTM RC 200 are also likely to feel the heat from Suzuki’s latest. In terms of pricing, we expect the Suzuki Gixxer 250 to be priced near the Rs. 1.5 lakh mark. This would make the motorcycle pricier than the Yamaha Faazer 250, which is less powerful, but cheaper than the Honda CBR 250R. In a sense, pricing the Gixxer 250 SF at the Rs. 1.5 lakh mark would let Suzuki play the sweet spot in terms of pricing. For now, check the video out.

The Suzuki Gixxer 250 SF will be powered by a 250cc, single cylinder four stroke engine that produces 26 Bhp of peak power and 22.9 Nm of peak torque. Like the Yamaha Fazer 250, this motor will get air and oil cooling, and will be a liquid cooled unit, unlike the on the Honda CBR 250R. The motor will run a four valve head, a single overhead camshaft and fuel injection though. The lack of twin overhead camshafts in the engine is a clear indication that Suzuki wants to price the Gixxer 250 SF very competitively. Other key bits on the motorcycle include telescopic front forks, monoshock rear suspension, alloy wheels, tubeless tyres, a fully digital LCD instrument cluster, clip-on handlebars, split seats, full fairing and rear set footpegs.

The Suzuki Gixxer 250 SF will be positioned as a sporty, everyday motorcycle that can also do the occasional weekend tourer duties. What will be interesting to see is whether Suzuki will deploy the same motor on naked street bike and cruiser variants, like it does in case of the Gixxer SF 150, whose siblings include the Intruder 155 and the Gixxer 150. While this would be a logical progression for Suzuki’s 250cc sportsbike range in India, the Japanese two wheeler giant has not confirmed anything for now. Coming back to the Gixxer 250, the motorcycle will lead Suzuki’s charge into the fast growing sportsbike market of India, which is currently dominated by the Austrian motorcycle brand KTM.

Suzuki Gixxer 250 Sf 1

In the past, Suzuki had a presence in the 250cc sportsbike segment with the Inazuma 250. The motorcycle was equipped with a parallel twin engine known for its silky smoothness, but failed to take off in the market thanks to odd-ball looks and a steep price tag. In its second coming into this segment, Suzuki is expected to price the Gixxer 250 SF a lot more affordably, and this also means that the latest sportsbike will be a much better seller for the brand than the Inazuma 250. Later today, Suzuki will also launch the 2019 Gixxer 150 alongside the 250cc model. We’re riding both motorcycles at the Buddh International Circuit. Stay tuned for our full review later in the day.

Toyota Corolla Altis plastered with cowdung: We tell you why!

The month of May is on us now and with it come the great Indian summers. With temperatures already soaring above 40 degrees Celcius in several parts of the country, we wonder what would it be like in the coming months of June and July. Travelling in a car during the day without a good AC in these months becomes quite unbearable due to the intense heat.

However, we Indians have been quite innovative since the start and ‘hence there is no dearth of Jugaad’ technology across the country. Joining the elite list of ‘Jugaads’ is this Toyota Corolla Altis, whose owner has found the ultimate way of beating the heat this summer. The Facebook page of Animal Helpline- Karuna Foundation recently posted these pictures which show a sedan covered in cow dung.

Corolla Cowdung

Seems like Indians are using innovative ways to keep their cars cool in the scorching summer this year. Just a few days back, we told you how a Jaguar XE owner found a way to keep his big cat cool by using a thatched roof. This guy, however, wanted a cooling solution for the whole car and not just the roof. Therefore, he covered his older generation Toyota Corolla Altis in a uniform layer of cow dung. The job has been done in such a professional way that one can easily miss it for some sort of a wrap when viewing the car from a distance.

No, we don’t know how it smells and neither do we want to. In all probability though, the owner would have taken care of these aspects and the car would not be smelling foul. For those wondering about the effectiveness of this method, it does work to some extent. Cowdung is actually an insulator which blocks the heat transfer of the hot outer atmosphere to the cooler interiors of the car. For the same reasons, a lot of people in rural areas follow a similar method to keep their homes cool. For a Japanese car though, this is likely to be a first-in-world case.

Corolla Cowdung 2

As one can make out from these pictures, the Toyota Corolla Altis here originally came with a white paint job which is also the most popular colour choice for this car. The Toyota  Corolla is the overall best selling car in the world and is known for its bomb-proof reliability. Talking about the unique brown-caked finish Corolla Altis here, it seems ready to take on a solar flare if something like that happens anytime this summer.

If you notice, you’ll see that actually, the guys who did the finishing work were quite good at their job. Proper space has been left for the rear bumper reflectors, the Toyota badge and logo, number plates and grille along with holes for the parking sensors. There are two things, however, which left us pondering. One, what if someone accidentally rubs past the body of the car? Will his clothes get brown marks or has this been taken care of too by applying some sort of coating above the cow-dung layer. Second, what happens when this natural cooling layer needs to be scraped off. Will the paint get damaged or has this been taken care of too.

The summer season is on and the temperatures will only soar higher in the coming weeks. If you are looking for some quick solutions to beat the heat while driving your car but haven’t yet had a leap of faith for the cow-dung job, we got you covered. You can learn more about some of the ways to keep your car cool and get your AC in optimal condition by clicking here.

Suzuki has launched an updated version of their 150 cc faired bike, the Gixxer SF. The much-awaited updated Gixxer SF was revealed a few days back in leaked pictures and gets a similar styling as the recently launched bigger brother, the Gixxer 250. The Gixxer SF has been priced at Rs. 1,09,870 (ex-showroom, Delhi) which is an increment of around Rs. 9,000 over than the previous ABS equipped model. The bike rivals the likes of the Yamaha Fazer 2.0 and the Hero Xtreme 200S chiefly. The Hero Xtreme 200S itself was launched recently and will provide the Gixxer SF with some good competition.

Suzuki Gixxer Sf 1

Talking about the Gixxer SF, the bikes now gets a much more aggressive design than the previous model. The new design is inspired by the bigger Gixxer 250 and the Gixxer SF gets a similar face. The headlights are sharp looking tri-panel units that give the bike a sharp and sleek look. Other changes include clip-on handlebars and new chrome-tipped double-barrel exhaust, a split seat design, and some new graphics to make the bike more attractive. The tail section has been revised too and the bike now gets a split seat design. Overall, it looks much more sporty than the previous model of the bike.

Though the bike looks like an all-new model, the changes made are more aesthetic in nature as the mechanical configurations remain more or less the same. The Suzuki Gixxer SF gets powered by a 155 cc air-cooled engine that puts out 13.9 Bhp of power at 8,000 rpm along with 14 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Compared to the previous model, this one gets a slight drop in power output (14.6 Bhp vs 13.9 Bhp now). Further, the bike now weighs 146 kg, which is around 5 kg more than the previous version. The performance of the bike, therefore, will take a dip due to lower power and heavier weight.

The engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox and is a fuel-injected unit. Unlike the previous version of the bike, Suzuki has equipped the bike with a single channel ABS as standard. apart from this, the Japanese manufacturer has strengthened the frame on the new bike with a thicker centre tube and has also retuned the suspension slightly.

Gixxer Sf 150

The bike rides on the same 17-inch alloy wheels and tubeless tyres (100/70-17 front and 140/60-17R rear) which did duty on the previous model of the bike. It now comes with ABS as standard fitment, though it is a single channel unit and not a double channel one in order to keep costs in check. As of now, there is no official word from the company about an updated naked version of the Gixxer. However, expect it to be brought in here soon and will come with similar changes as on the Gixxer SF.

As mentioned earlier, the Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 will take on the likes of the Yamaha Fazer 2.0 and the Hero Xtreme 200S chiefly. It will be interesting to see how the bike fares in the market now, given it now looks much more attractive. The pricing of the bike has been increased by more than Rs.9,000 as well but it comes with a host of improvements that justify the price.

The Suzuki Gixxer 250 rides on multi-spoke, diamond cut, 17-inch alloy wheels that are shod on with tubeless 110/70 profile tire front and 150/60 tire at the rear. As for the suspension duties, they are taken care of by telescopic forks up front and a monoshock unit at the rear. Both the front and the rear wheels get disc brakes. To let you know, Suzuki previously sold a naked 250 cc bike by the name of Inazuma 250 in India but it didn’t become popular chiefly because of its high price tag. However, the Gixxer 250 looks like a promising bike and has covered all the basics. It looks good, has a powerful engine, is priced decently and comes with all the necessary kit. Suzuki is also offering additional accessories with the bike like a DC power socket, tank protectors, seat covers and smoked visor among others. It now remains to be seen if the Gixxer 250 turns out to be the success the Japanese manufacturer is hoping it to be.
