Kia Motors, which entered the Indian market last year has become one of the best-sellers in just a few months of its launch. Kia launched its second product at the 2020 Auto Expo in Delhi in the form of a luxury MPV – the Carnival. While there are many reports that suggest that Kia may enter the highly competitive hatchback and the affordable sedan segment in India, Financial Express reports that they are currently not planning to launch any vehicle in those segments yet.

Kia Sonet Concept

Kia’s first vehicle, the Seltos has become a huge success in the Indian market and it became the best-selling vehicle in the segment soon after its launch. Kia recently launched the premium MPV – the Carnival that takes on the higher-end variants of the Toyota Innova Crysta and offers many more features. In the future, Kia will continue to focus on the premium vehicles and will not enter the affordable segment.

As per an interview with Lorenz Glab, vice-president, product management sub-division, Hyundai Motor Group, the parent company of Kia Motors, Kia is only planning to launch products in the premium segments and become a niche brand in India. They will not launch products to take on the segment leaders in the coming future.

So we can safely assume that there will not be any hatchback or a sub-4m compact sedan from the brand in the Indian market. Kia will instead focus on the growing segment – the SUV and will launch MPVs in the market.

Kia Sonet Concept Rear

Kia recently showcased the all-new QYI at the 2020 Auto Expo, which will become the brand’s most affordable vehicle in the Indian market when it is launched. The vehicle will compete with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford Figo and more. It will get a long list of segment-first features that includes Bose speakers, ventilated seats and many more.

There are no engine details of the car revealed by Kia but it is likely to be offered with the 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that powers the Hyundai Venue. Kia will also introduce the intelligent Manual Transmission, which will allow the driver to shift gears without using the clutch. Kia plans to launch electric vehicles in the Indian market in the coming times.

3 New Maruti Suzuki Cars Launching Soon: All of them shown at the Auto Expo

$

0

It has been a busy Auto Expo 2020 for Maruti Suzuki India Limited. In the past three days, it has unveiled three cars that will hit the showrooms very, very soon: Brezza petrol, S-Cross petrol and the new Ignis.

Maruti Ignis Facelift

As you might recall, Maruti isn’t yet ready with a BS6 compliant diesel and that has meant its diesel-only offerings such as Vitara Brezza and S-Cross had to switch to petrol.

Vitara Brezza Petrol

Maruti Brezza Facelift 1

Out of the three, Brezza is the most significant one as it is the segment leader and clocks an impressive ~10,000 units a month in sales. Till now, it was available only with the Fiat-sourced 1.3 litre diesel powerplant. The Brezza will now be powered by a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol motor that has been doing the duty on cars like Ertiga and Ciaz. This petrol engine produces 104 Bhp in power and 138 Nm of torque. While the numbers may not sound big, they are good enough to make Brezza a peppy city drive. This motor will get two gearbox options: a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter automatic. Maruti’s mild hybrid tech too would find a place here helping boost the mileage.

It remains to be seen if Maruti also offers a CNG-Petrol dual fuel variant of the SUV. Claimed mileage for the petrol-manual trim is 17.03 Kmpl while the petrol-automatic hybrid manages an impressive 18.,6 Kmpl, both figures ARAI certified.

While prices aren’t out yet, Maruti might throw a surprise by offering the petrol Brezza at prices lower than the outgoing diesel Brezza which will make it a very attractive buy.Exterior changes on the 2020 Maruti Brezza Facelift include a dollop of chrome on the new front grille, revised headlamps that gets LED DRLs, a refreshed design for the alloy wheels, reprofiled front and rear bumpers and a dual tone paint scheme. The facelifted compact SUV will go on sale shortly, and bookings will soon open at all Maruti Suzuki ARENA dealerships across India. The SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, gets a revamp and is offered on the top-end trims.

S-Cross Petrol

Maruti S Cross Petrol 2

The big change here to is under the bonnet. So, the S-Cross will get the same 1.5 litre, 4-cylinder K-Series petrol engine as the Brezza. It produces 104 Bhp of power and 138 Nm in torque.

The engine is backed by Suzuki hybrid Vehicle system (SHVS) which is a mild hybrid helping cut emissions and improve fuel efficiency. The gearbox combinations will be similar too. There will be 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter automatic. The same engine-gearbox combo is already offered in Ertiga, XL6 and Ciaz. So, it’s a tried and tested combination.

The one advantage of this switch to petrol will be the reduced price. The current diesel S-Cross starts at Rs. 8.8 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi—the new one should be cheaper by Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh, making it a very attractive alternative to compact SUVs and even the higher end versions of compact sedan. While it does not have the cache of a compact SUV—crossovers are yet to take off in India—S-Cross actually offer much more space, a huge boot and even better ride than many. In many ways, the experience is closer to that of a proper sedan that costs a lot more.

Ignis Facelift

Maruti Ignis Facelift 2

Ignis gets a facelift revised styling at the front end, with a toothy grille and bumper inserts. The A-Pillar gets blacked out while the alloy wheel design is new. At the rear, new bumper inserts round off the design. Two more colour options– Lucent Orange and Turquoise Blue—are on offer. What’s more, bookings begin today.

There are no changes under the hood: Ignis will continue to be powered by a 1.2 liter-4 cylinder K-Series petrol engine with 82 Bhp of peak power and 113 Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard while a 5 speed automated manual transmission (AMT) is offered as an option.

The car competes with the Tata Tiago, Hyundai Grand i10 and the Ford Figo in terms of pricing. Key features on offer include a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, LED projector headlamps, daytime running LEDs, twin airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, reverse parking camera, seat belt reminders and speed alerts.

Jawa Motorcycles made its re-entry into the Indian market couple of years ago with Jawa and Jawa 42 motorcycles. The brand became popular in very short period of time and had a very long waiting period for the motorcycles. An year after the launch of Jawa motorcycles, the brand launched their third offering Perak. Perak is basically a factory custom bobber and is one of a kind of motorcycle.

It is the country’s first most affordable bobber motorcycle at the moment. Perak only gets one seat as standard. Here we have a video that shows how the Perak would look like if it were to be launched in a twin-seat configuration.

The video has been uploaded by SRK Designs. The main difference that one notices in the render is the additional seat at the rear. The seat gets an extension to accommodate one more passenger. In stock version, the seat is suspended in air whereas in the render, the extension is supported by a frame so that it can handle the extra weight. The render here also gets a foot rest for the rear passengers. Apart from from that nothing else has changed.

Other cosmetic changes made to the Perak include a custom paint job on the fuel tank and side panel with Perak written on it. Side wall of the tyres are also painted in white which gives it a retro touch. Headlight grille has also been installed on the bike. Perak has a slow slung stance and fenders have been chopped off.

Jawa Perak Twin Seat Render Featured

The motorcycle gets a matte black finish paint job and the whole motorcycle carries a black theme. Perak gets a spoke wheel, bar end mirrors, monoshock suspension and twin exhaust pipe generating a throaty exhaust. The engine powering the Jawa Perak is a 334 cc, four-stroke single-cylinder unit, which is a bored-out version of the 295 cc engine that powers the Jawa Classic and the Forty-Two.

The Jawa Perak’s engine generates 30 Bhp and 31 Nm of torque. The engine is a single cylinder, liquid cooled, fuel injected unit and is now BS6 compliant. Perak is priced at Rs 1.94 lakh ex-showroom. Jawa has already started taking bookings for the motorcycle and will start delivery on 02 April 2020. Man rides with venomous snake in helmet for 11 Kms

A man from Kerala did the unthinkable. He rode his motorcycle for 11 kilometers with a highly venomous snake inside his helmet. Ranjith, a school teacher who teaches Sanskrit, was later taken to a Taluk hospital, where his blood was checked for venom. Surprisingly, he wasn’t bitten by the snake, which had died by then, reports Mathrubhumi.

Snake Inside Helmet

Not aware of the snake’s presence in his helmet, Ranjith left his home for Kandanad St.Mary’s High School at 830 AM on the 5th of February. After finishing his class at the Kandanad school, which was about 5 kilometers from his house, he left for another school at 1130 AM. Upon reaching the second school – Thripunithura RLV school – situated 6 kms away from Kandanad school, the teacher discovered the snake in his helmet. The snake – the highly poisonous Common Krait, was dead by then, crushed inside the helmet. The teacher has now discarded the helmet, burning it down. Meanwhile, here’s what he had to say about the incident,

I think the snake might have got into the helmet from the pond near my house. The snake was inside my helmet for a long time, but I never felt anything unusual while wearing it.

Kerala is one of the wetter and greener states of India, where the snake population is quite high. Residents of India’s south western state live in harmony with snakes and often encounter snakes as they go about regular life. Mos encounters are harmless. Recently, a school girl in Malappuram district of Kerala found a snake in her schoolbag, and luckily was unharmed.

Snakes often seek warm and cozy places to rest, and automobiles – with many hiding spots for these reptiles – present great spots for them to rest. Snakes curling up in cars is quite common in Kerala, and sometimes, they are found hiding even in motorcycles. In such situations, it’s best to get away from the vehicle as calmly as possible, and engage the services of a professional snake catcher to catch and release the snake in the wild. If bitten by a snake, seek professional medical help immediately.

While most snakes are non-venomous, most people will find it difficult to recognize a venomous snake from a non-venomous one. It’s not a wise thing to attempt catching or killing a snake on your own. Snakes are important for bio-diversity, and should not be killed, but rather relocated to some place in the wild. If you live in a snake infested region, keep the phone numbers of professional snake catchers handy. You never know when you’ll need their services.

Couple of days ago we featured a story of an avid car enthusiasts from Kerala’s Cherthala town in Alappuzha district who had built a smaller version of the Volkswagen Beetle. The video went viral on the internet and  Rakesh Babu who had built the car has now come up with another video that shows the making of the homemade Beetle. It shows the how the creation looked like at various stages and what all things did he use to give it a VW Beetle like finish.

The video has been uploaded by sudus custom youtube channel. The video starts by explaining how did he recreated the headlamps on his Beetle. He explains in the video that he took the headlights from an auto rickshaw which already has a chrome like rim on the outside. With normal lights, battery had a tendency to discharge very fast. Rakesh bought aftermarket LED lights that were bright enough and would not put a load on the battery as well.

Next is the bumper which is made out of motorcycle crash guard. Similarly, the tyres which is also borrowed from an auto rickshaw gets a white wall finish to give the car a retro look. The front glass of the car is made out of polycarbonate sheet and the whole body work is done by the artist using metal sheets.

Rakesh has never seen a Beetle in person and has done this job by only referring to pictures of the original car which commendable looking at the attention given to the details. The mirrors are from a TVS Fiero FX motorcycle and door handles are from Ambassador car.

Volkswagen Beetle Home Made Featured

The interiors like the seats, and the seats are also very similar to the one seen in the original Beetle. Coming to the mechanical bits of the car, it uses an old 2-stroke engine of a Suzuki Samurai motorcycle. In an earlier video he had said that the car returned him a fuel efficiency of around 30 kmpl. The engine is mounted at the rear and also gets a reverse gear.

There is a self start and Rakesh has also given a provision to start it using a normal kick starter. It took him around 3 months to complete this project and the total amount spent in making this car is around Rs 40,000 only. This makes it one of the most tasteful yet cost-effective home-made mini cars we’ve seen in India.

Watch the story of the iconic motorcycle Rajdoot 175 [Video]

Indian motorcycles market at moment offers a wide variety of offering from a simple commuter motorcycle to a high end super sportsbike. That was not how the motorcycling culture was always. Half a century ago, the options were limited and the technology was also not that advanced. One of the famous motorcycle that we used have at that time was the Rajdoot 175. But have you ever wondered about how did we got the Rajdoot 175 in India?. Well, here is a documentary video that will explain the same. The video has been uploaded by EmotoZ on his youtube channel.

It all started in 1930’s when a German manufacturer DKW made a 125-cc, 2-stroke  motorcycle named RT-125. Motorcycle became popular and was a huge success for the brand. Things changed when Germany lost World War II and had to sell many German products to the ally countries as part of war reparations. War reparations is the compensation payment made after a war by the vanquished to the victors. As part of this Germany had to license the design of RT-125 to other countries.

Later Poland based manufacturer SFM manufactured the very same RT with a new name and engine. It was known as SHL M11 motorcycle and had a 175-cc engine instead of the old 125-cc unit. During that time Indian motorcycle market did not had many options to choose from. The only motorcycles during that period were the Royal Enfield Bullet and Jawa. We did not had a single motorcycle that was under 250-cc segment.

Rajdoot Featured 1

People loved the engine and performance of the Jawa whereas the Royal Enfield was known for its build quality. Both motorcycles were heavy and the cost of maintenance was also high. People started looking for a motorcycle that was easy to maintain, had great build quality and was lighter than the existing ones. Escorts a far equipment manufacturer figured out the opportunity and brought in the SHL M11 to India in 1962 and renamed it as Escorts Rajdoot 175. People were impressed with riding position, low maintenance and fuel efficiency of Rajdoot and that made it popular among the Indian buyers.

After Rajdoot 175, many other bikes made it to the market with the very same engine in different shapes and sizes but were never as popular as the original Rajdoot 175. With the entry Japanese motorcycles in the country, Rajdoot lost its charm over the the course of time as it was too simple, and even a bit crude for modern times.

Tata Sierra Concept: First official video out

At the 2020 Auto Expo, Tata Motors revealed the stunning Sierra as a concept vehicle, which stunned the visitors. The 90s car, Sierra was way ahead of its time in terms of design and technology. Well, the iconic nameplate makes a comeback with the concept Sierra, which became a major attraction at the 2020 Auto Expo. While it may take years before the Sierra concept takes the production form if Tata decides to make a production version of the vehicle, Tata has already released an official TVC showcasing the Tata Sierra’s highlights and design elements.

The Tata Sierra concept pays homage to the design of the original three-door Sierra. It gets the large glass area on the rear of the SUV, which makes up for almost half of the roof area. While the original Sierra also offers a similar design, the SUV had a solid roof instead. The platform on which the vehicle is based on is not known. Since it looks quite inspired by the design of the Land Rover Discovery and the new Defender, it is quite possible that Tata has utilised a Land Rover platform to develop the vehicle. In the production form, Tata may offer the Sierra as a niche segment vehicle with a platform from JLR.

Since it is a concept vehicle, the interior of the Sierra gets some thrilling design cues. There is a revolving co-drive seat while the rear bench is made up of wood. Tata has not revealed anything on the powertrain of the vehicle but the TVC shows that it gets an electric charge, which indicates that it will be an EV. To show the green footprint of the vehicle, the dashboard gets a layer of faux grass and a similar carpet is at the rear of the vehicle too.

Tata Sierra Concept 2020 1280 04

The design of the Sierra matches the true DNA of new-generation Tata vehicles. It gets the similar split headlamps with LEDs. The rear of the vehicle gets a bodywide LED tail lamp that has a sweeping transition similar to the Audi cars. It also continued to offer the two-door design layout that we all remember with the Sierra. For the convenience of the rear passengers, a sliding door has been provided in the rear, which is electronically controlled.

Tata recently discontinued the Safari Storme from the Indian market and the all-new Sierra takes its place in the future. But how long do we have to wait to see the glimpse of the production version? Well, it can be years before Sierra becomes a reality but before that, Tata will have to get a green signal to start working on the production version of the car.

Maruti Suzuki unveiled the new Ignis facelift at 2020 Auto Expo. The new Ignis will be launched in the market very soon and the manufacturer has already released a TVC for the car. It is the first-ever official TVC of the Ignis facelift and here are the details.

In the new TVC, Maruti Suzuki describes the car as the new Urban Compact SUV. While the Indian version of the Ignis does not gets the AllGrip AWD system, it is the design and looks of the vehicle that makes it heavily inspired by an SUV. The new Ignis has also received a slew of design changes that makes it much more intimidating and adds a better road presence to the vehicle.

The facelifted version of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis only receives cosmetic updates. These cosmetic updates include a new grille, which is inspired by the Vitara Brezza. Also, the fog lamp housings, bumpers and the air dam of the vehicle have been revised to add the muscular look. Overall, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis looks fresh and offers a mid-cycle update that will keep it going for a few more years in the market. The Ignis showcased at the Auto Expo also receives newly designed alloy wheels, which ensures that the vehicle gets a new look on the side. Also, the black-out A-Pillar further makes the premium hatchback look slightly different from the previous version.

On the inside, Maruti Suzuki has kept all the features similar to the current version of the Ignis. However, a new Smart Play infotainment system with Android Auto and Android Auto has been added to the top-end variants. The Ignis will continue to offer the dual-tone paint schemes and there are two new colours available with the car – Lucent Orange and Turquoise Blue. Also, the customised iCreate options will continue to be available with the new Ignis as well. Customers will be able to customise their vehicles online through the configurator or opt for accessories at the dealerships while buying the vehicle.

Ignis 1

Maruti Suzuki launched the BS6 compliant Ignis last year and the same drivetrain will continue to power the upcoming version of the car. There is no change in the 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine powering the Ignis. It continues to offer 82 Bhp of maximum power and 113 Nm of peak torque. The car will be available with an optional 5-speed AMT automatic transmission while the 5-speed manual transmission will be standard. It will take on the likes of Tata Tiago, Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS, Ford Figo and more.

Maruti Suzuki has already started to accept the bookings for the Ignis online and the deliveries for the vehicle are expected to start soon.

Renault Triber compact SUV: New turbo petrol engine revealed at Auto Expo

Renault India has revealed the 1 liter-3 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that will soon be offered with the Triber at the 2020 Auto Expo. The triple pot turbo petrol engine (called TCe 100) makes 100 PS of peak power and 160 Nm of peak torque, both massive increases over the 72 PS-96 Nm outputs that the Triber’s current 1 liter naturally aspirated petrol engine (SCe) outputs.

Renault Triber Amt 1

The Triber’s turbo petrol engine will get a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard, and it remains to be seen if an automatic gearbox option is offered with this motor. If Renault does decide to go ahead with an automatic option for the turbo petrol engined Triber, expect it to be a CVT unit instead of the cheaper automated manual transmission (AMT) unit. However, the Triber’s current 1 liter petrol engine (naturally aspirated) will soon get a 5 speed AMT option, and such a variant has already been showcased at the Auto Expo.

Launched in the second half of 2019, the Triber compact MPV has turned out to be a big success for Renault in India, in fact emerging as the French company’s best seller. The new variants: AMT and turbo petrol, are aimed at keeping the sales momentum going. While the AMT trim of the Triber will cost about Rs. 50,000 more than the manual trim, the turbo petrol engined trim could be pricier. Expect to pay about Rs. 70,000 more for the Triber Turbo Petrol trim, which is essentially meant to fill in for a diesel engine, which will not be offered on the compact MPV.

Renault Triber Amt 2

The Triber shares most parts with the Kwid, and also sits on the same platform (CMF-A) as the hatchback. This has allowed Renault to price the compact MPV very competitively, and much of its sales success has to do with the affordable price tag. Apart from the great pricing, the Renault Triber has a bunch of things going for it.

1. It’s styled very attractively, and does NOT look like a cheap car. 2. The crossover-ish looks along with the high ground clearance of 180 mm+ gives the Triber good street presence and also makes it a very practical car for Indian conditions. 3. The flexible and modular seating that can either accommodate 7 people or a lot of luggage is another big selling point of the compact MPV. With Renault all set to add more variants to the mix, the Triber’s sales may sustain the strong momentum going forward, and even may show a nice increase over current levels.

Kia Motors is one of those brands in the country that gained popularity in a very short span of time. The brand made its debut with the mid-size SUV Seltos and stole the hearts of Indian customers. It is a good looking, feature loaded and powerful SUV. After Seltos, the second product that Kia launched was the luxury MPV Carnival. Kia Motors announced the price of the Carnival MPV at the Auto Expo this year and also showcased their third product which will be based on the Sonet concept. After all this, now Kia is planning to come up with a mid-size MPV that will rival with cars like Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Mahindra Marazzo. According to Autocar India, Kia is seriously considering to introduce a mid size MPV as this segment is slowly getting popular among the family audiences.

Kia Mpv 1

Han-Woo Park, president and CEO Kia Motors had said,

As you can see, we have launched the Carnival, and with this, we will develop the luxury MPV segment in the Indian market. I have already got some good response from Indian consumers. We are now thinking about another MPV. As you know, Kia is a very strong SUV and MPV player. So the next one I’m considering is another MPV model for Indian customers.

The MPV is likely to be based on Seltos platform but will be slightly bigger than Seltos and will be a completely different product. Kia’s main competition in this segment would be Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga which inspite of last year’s slowdown Maruti Suzuki managed to sell around 93,000 units in 2019.

Kia Sonet Concept

What might work in favour of Kia is the discontinuation of Ertiga’s diesel engine which would heavily affect the cab sector. Kia has also confirmed that they will bring the mid size MPV to Indian market by the end of 2021 and the same will be exported to International market as well.

Coming back to Sonet, which is Kia’s next product is a compact SUV that will compete with cars like Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue etc in the segment. It will get a 1.0 litre turbo petrol with DCT and manual, a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol with an intelligent manual transmission and a diesel engine with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. Kia is likely to launch Sonet based compact SUV in India later this year. Kia Motors has also noted that it will stick to utility vehicles for the Indian car market, and steer clear from the hatchback segment.

Maruti Ignis covered with cow dung wins first prize in a car competition

Cow dug coated vehicles almost became a trend in India last year when the scorching heat of the summers forced people to think of innovative ideas. A woman from Gujarat covered her Toyota Corolla with a thick coat of cow dung, which became international news. Following that, many from around India did similar things to their vehicles to bring down the temperature and even a doctor became popular after he provided the same treatment to his Mahindra XUV500. A gentleman from Raipur, Chattishargh won the first prize after he applied a thick coat of cow dung on his Maruti Suzuki Ignis. Here’s what happened.

Ignis 2

The report from Patrika says that during a rally earlier this month, a slew of car owners participated in the Raipur City. The rally of about thirty cars saw various vehicles and the owners had given a unique to their vehicle to make it look different from the others. After the rally, prizes were distributed to the vehicles with the most unique themes and the first prize winner, Rajesh, had put a coat of cow dung on his car.

There were themes like women empowerment, eco-friendly and drug abuse and more from the participants on their respective vehicles. The winner’s car came with the theme of recycling and reuse with the coat of cow dung on his car. The organisers reportedly handed him the award. It is not known if any cash prize was involved in the prize.

Rajesh says that he used 21 kg of cow dung and straws to cover the whole vehicle. No comments from the owner are there and the ideology of recycling and reuse by using the cow dung is also not known.

The Ignis covered in the cow dung also went through the city roads grabbing all the attention on the roads. While there is no indication of the cabin temperature going down by using the cow dung coat on the vehicle, the paint of the car may get damaged by covering it such an abrasive layer.

Ignis 1

Cow dung and straw are the most common materials used in the mud houses of the villages in India. The straw and the cow dung captures the moisture, which in turn keeps the surface cooler by a few degrees. However, the cars are made out of metal and since metal heat up quite quickly, all the moisture from the layer of cow dung on the vehicle will evaporate within an hour on a hot day. Either the layer has to be watered every hour to keep it effective or it will be useless. However, adding water to the layer often may cause the vehicle to rust and bring down its overall life by a few years. So the best way to beat the heat is to park the car in a shady area and use the air conditioner whenever required!
