Kia Seltos: Prices of top-end GTX+ petrol automatic and diesel automatic trims revealed

Kia Motors dealers have begun accepting bookings for the top-end GTX+ petrol automatic and diesel automatic trims of the Seltos Compact SUV. Both new variants will be officially introduced in the coming weeks. Prices of both the GTX+ petrol automatic and diesel automatic trims have been pegged at Rs. 16.99 lakhs, which makes them about a lakh pricier than the current top-end GTX trims. The additional lakh gives the Seltos Petrol Automatic and Diesel Automatic a host of features such as 400W Bose stereo, an electric sunroof, ventilated front seats with power adjustment for the driver’s seat, 360 degree parking camera, front parking sensors and art-leather seats.  Mechanically, the new variant will be based on the 1.4 liter turbo petrol engined automatic and 1.5 liter diesel engined automatic variants of the Kia Seltos.

8kia Seltos Petrol Diesel Review

In other words, buyers of the GTX+ petrol automatic trim will get the 1.4 liter turbo petrol motor making 140 Bhp-242 Nm, and a 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearbox option. People who choose the diesel automatic GTX+ trim will get the 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel engine with 115 Bhp-250 Nm and a 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox. With the addition of the new, top-end trim on the automatic variants, the Kia Seltos is easily the best rounded SUV that caters to a very wide range of budgets and requirements. Most car makers in India have been shying from offering top-end trim levels on automatic variants in the affordable car categories, and Kia Motors has just bucked that trend. Will this force the competition to follow suit and offer top-end trims with automatic gearboxes? Time will tell.

In its very first month of launch, the Kia Seltos has become India’s best selling compact SUV, displacing its cousin – the Hyundai Creta – from the top perch. Expect Kia Motors to continue with the strong sales run for at least a few months more as the South Korean automaker is sitting on a massive order book that has over 35,000 bookings. Considering that Kia will produce about 5,000 units of the Seltos SUV each month from its Anantapur factory in Andhra Pradesh, expect the Seltos to dominate sales charts for the rest of the year. The SUV takes on the likes of the Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur, Nissan Kicks and the Maruti S-Cross. In price terms, it also rubs shoulders with the likes of the Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Mahindra XUV500 and the Jeep Compass. Prices of the Seltos start from Rs. 9.69 lakhs, and go all the way up to Rs. 16.99 lakhs, ex-showroom pan India.

Ford Figo: Used Car Buyers’ Guide

Ford Figo: Know the car

The Ford Figo is a mid-size hatchback that was launched in March 2010. While the first generation got off a great start, being popular for its reliable diesel motor and great dynamics, the latest model has not been a successful product for the company in India and is among the lowest selling models for Ford in India. This is mainly due to poor mileage for the petrol variant and better rivals in the market at the same price band now.

Ford Figo has always been a great car to drive even though its 1.2 petrol and 1.4 diesel units offered in the first-gen models were not exactly the most powerful. It was quite spacious on the inside and came with good ride quality. The first-gen model didn’t offer the auto options. The current model adds power to the already-good handling with better engines. Sadly though, sales haven’t picked up which means the resale value is among the lowest in the segment of mid-size hatchbacks.

Prices today start at Rs 5.23 lac, which is about 50% higher than the original launch price of Rs 3.49 lac in 2010. This is a big number but over the years, there have been improvements in terms of performance, safety and features.

Brief history of the Ford Figo in India

Ford Figo Generations

The first generation model was showcased in September 2009 and eventually made its India debut in March 2010. It came with 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel motor and became an instant hit with consumers. Sales figures went over 5,000 units a month with waiting periods hitting the roof. However, with years, the demand for the Figo came down crashing.

In 2015, Ford launched the all-new second-generation model that came with a better 1.2-litre petrol and an all-new 1.5-litre diesel. The latter made it a diesel rocket! In 2019, the company rolled out the updated model with a price slash, design tweaks and added features. On the 2way, in April 2018, a rugged version, called the Freestyle was launched.

As much as we like the Figo, we are surprised with the extremely low sales and demand in the market.

Profile of the Typical New Ford Figo Buyer in India

Used Ford Figo Photo 1

The Ford Figo has always been a driver’s car and this means a lot of en-thusiasts eye the Figo when they are in the market for a mid size hatch-back. Most buyers are the young crowd who want a peppy, safe and good handling car – they have micro families and a car is their third space after their home and office.

These are second-time car buyers though we cant rule out those who have been driving a car in their house for long and now need their own independent set of wheels.

Profile of the Typical Used Ford Figo Buyer

Used Ford Figo Photo 2

Given the performance and thrill angle of the Figo, a used example is also aimed towards those who are automobile enthusiasts and understand what Ford cars are known for. These buyers are well informed and seek safety, driving pleasure and solid build over factors like fuel economy, resale value etc.

Given the low resale value, a used Ford Figo is also a tempting option for those with a budget of a new small, entry-level hatchback. For about Rs 4 lac, you can easily get hold of a current gen Figo in the used car market.

Key positives of the Ford Figo

Ford has always made cars that come with a great build quality. Although the current (second) generation model has lost the tank-like feel of the original one, it still is among the better ones in the segment. We love the 1.5 diesel for its torquey nature and outright acceleration while for those who seek convenience of an automatic, the 1.5 petrol offers class leading performance.
Ride quality remains good and the Figo continues to offer ease of driving. Ford also offers 5 year / 1 lakh km warranty, among the lowest in class service costs and the entire kit of safety with as many as 6 airbags.

Key negatives of the Ford Figo

First is the low re-sale value owning to poor demand in the market. This means as a customer, when you decide to sell your Figo after 3-5 years, you will get far less value as compared to use a used Grand i10 or a used Swift.

Next is the 1.2 petrol that isn’t a match for the K-Series engines from Maruti or even the 1.2 from Hyundai. The rear seats are best for 4, not 5 adults and ditto for limited rear headroom. For some people, the extended and low front bumper can be an issue on bad roads.

The ideal used Ford Figo one can buy

What is the ideal example to look for in the used car market. List out mileage, make and variant. For example, in case of the Honda Accord, a car that’s about 5 years old with around 40,000-50,000 Kms on the odometer is a decent buy. Also, automatic preferable to manual as the chance of the clutch (major expense) being abused is minimal.

Ford launched the second generation Figo in September 2015 and this is the model we recommend in case you are in the market for a pre-owned mid-size hatchback.

This one was sold with a 1.2 petrol, 1.5 petrol (AT only) and a 1.5 diesel. While the diesel models might have high odometer mileage, petrol ones are generally used for city runs with less than 40,000 to 50,000 on the odometer. An automatic Figo is a superb urban car and thanks to low demand, can be bought for half the price of a new one.

Buying older and newer Ford Figo hatchbacks

Used Ford Figo Photo 3

The used car market has ample examples of the Ford Figo. The first model sold from 2010 till 2015 are a common sight. However, the car now feels dates in terms of design and interiors. So its best avoid this version.

The second-generation model sold in decent numbers and is the one to pick. Ford even launched a Sports model for a brief period of time and this came with a better steering – suspension set-up. It is difficult to find one though.

The latest model on sale is came in March 2019 and owning to low sales, finding a used example is rare. However, if you do, bargain hard and get the price down to 75% of the new car price as demand is extremely poor.

Used Ford Figo for the car enthusiaist

We say pick the 1.5 diesel model that offers 100 PS of power, more than the likes of the Swift diesel. Performance is excellent without sacrificing on low-end grunt and fuel economy. After market remaps are available and this makes the Figo diesel one hell of a quick car. The suspension and brakes are good enough to handle the power and torque too. The Freestyle model, launched post April 2018 is a good buy too but re-member, its value will be higher.

Buying Advice

What you should check, and typical problems for the Ford Figo

The Ford Figo underwent a few recalls on the way and if you are going for a test drive of a used one of the same batch, make sure the owner had the fault rectified. Details of recalls are:

1) Figos manufactured till 2012 had issues with the high pressure power assisted steering hose

2) Figos made between Sep’17 and April’19 could have been victims of a defective Battery Monitoring System (BMS) wiring harness.

Apart from this, some current generation Figo owners have complained of high engine oil consumption. Apart from this, the second generation Figo has been a trouble free hatchback.

Used Ford Figo hatchback: Typical maintenance issues and problems explained

High engine oil consumption in the diesel Figo could be due to various factors like a possible damage to the turbocharger or worn out seals. When you take a test drive, make sure you open the bonnet and check for the engine oil level on the dipstick.

Recall related issues are complimentary and should have been taken care of by the original owner. Apart from this, a well maintained Figo is known to last years without any major hassles.

Used Ford Figo: Expected Service Costs

The current generation Figo is relatively easy on the pocket in terms of scheduled maintenance cost. Here is an example of how much you would pay for the 40,000 and 50,000 km for a post 2015 Figo:

2015-2019 Figo Petrol: Rs 5724 / Rs 3499
2015-2019 Figo Diesel: Rs 5583 / Rs 4361

Even the first-gen Figo is cheap to maintain. The 80,000km service for example will set you back by just Rs. 5,552 for the petrol and Rs. 5,682 for the diesel model.

Excessive engine oil consumption however might throw up a surprise – if its an issue with the turbo charger, expect to pay a hefty amount. So if possible, show the car to an authorized station before finalising it.

Expected real-world mileage of used Ford Figo

The current gen Ford Figo is a frugal hatchback. The 1.2 petrol comes with rated economy of just over 20 kmpl, which means an easy 13-14 in city usage. The older 1.2 on the 2015 model was a bit thirsty though.

However, the 1.5 diesel is excellent in terms of fuel economy and if you use the 4th and 5th gear in city runs, you can get over 20 kmpl. This rises to over 25 kmpl on highways at speeds of 85-90 km/h.

Maintenance and service tips for Ford Figo used car

As we have seen above, the Figo has a fairly affordable service cost and hence we recommend you to stick to authorized service centre when it comes to routine maintenance and even for spare parts.

Used Ford Figo: What to avoid

Used Ford Figo Photo 4

The first generation model, sold from 2010 till 2015 can be avoided and this is mainly because of the modern day current version that looks better, had peppier engines and more safety kit.

As we have said before, it is better to invest into a used Ford Figo of the current generation that was launched in 2015. It is a much modern option in the way it looks, drives and feels on the inside. The first gen model feels too old and dated in front of it.

If possible, try to get the Titanium model that comes feature loaded.

Our recommendations

Our choice is to pick the Freestyle version that was launched April 2018 or a similar year Figo. The poor resale value ensures that you will not be spending too much and yet will get a 1-2 year old model that is less used and feels as good as new. Expect to pay about 25% less than the value of a new car.

Ford Figo used car: What are your alternatives?

A used Hyundai Grand i10 is an apt alternative to a used Ford Figo. The Grand i10 offers similar levels of comfort and space and further has an easy going nature. Resale value will be higher though.

Another option is to consider a used Maruti Swift but at a higher budget. The Swift is a popular car and enjoys and unbeatable resale value in the market. Be ready to shell out a premium.

A used Tata Tiago is another good alternative. Opt for a high-end trim as that will cost the same as a used Ford Figo but offer you a lot of features and better aesthetics like alloy wheels.

Renault Triber: 0-100 Kph acceleration and 100-0 Kph braking test on video

$

French car manufacturer Renault had recently launched their compact MPV Triber in Indian market. Triber is India’s cheapest MPV with prices starting at Rs 4.95 lakhs, ex-showroom. It is based on Renault CMF-A platform on which Kwid hatchback is also built. The Triber is available in four variants: RXE, RXL, RXT and RXZ. This sub-four metre MPV has 3 row seats and can seat 7 people in it.  The 7 seat layout can be mixed and matched to suit the owner’s requirements. The compact MPV can be configured as a 2, 4, 6 and 7 seater. The last row consists of two removable seats, giving the MPV great flexibility in terms of carrying luggage and passengers.

Just like Kwid, Triber could be a game changer for Renault in India and can start a new sub-four metre MPV segment in Indian market. The Triber is powered by a 1 liter-3 cylinder petrol engine borrowed from the Kwid, but gets higher power and torque outputs. This motor makes 71 Bhp-96 Nm on the Triber, and is offered with a single gearbox option: a 5 speed manual. Higher power and torque figure also means that Triber might be quicker than Kwid. Here is a video from Power Stroke that reveals the 0-100 kmph time and also does a braking test. To watch the acceleration and braking part start from 1:20 seconds. The video starts by showing the exteriors design of the Triber MPV and later moves to the interior and explains all the features that triber comes with. he even pops the hood and shows the engine which we explained above.

Coming to the acceleration part, Renualt Triber managed to reach 100 kmph mark from stand still in 16.72 seconds. The time it took is actually not that bad considering the fact that it only has 1 Litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, which is the same as seen on Renault Kwid but with revised power and torque figures.

Next is the Braking part. Triber takes around 3.74 seconds only to stop the car completely from 100 kmph mark. That again is quite impressive, considering the fact that Triber is actually an MPV. The speed indication of both acceleration test and the braking test are also shown on the fully digital instrument cluster.

The Triber used in the video is the top-end trim version and is feature loaded. It gets Twin airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, seat belt reminder, ISOFIX child seat provision and speed alerts as safety features that are standard across trims. The touchscreen infotainment unit offers Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth music streaming and calling, and GPS navigation functions. Renault has aimed at targetting young buyers who are looking for an affordable outdoorsy vehicle. sales figures in the upcoming month would reveal whether Renault was successful with their strategy or not.

Luxurious petrol automatic used Skoda Superb saloon for sale at a sub-Maruti WagonR price

$

0

Getting a great deal when it comes to the used cars is quite common nowadays. However, there are a few deals that are difficult to ignore. Here is such deal where a used Skoda Superb, a full size, luxury sedan is available for the price cheaper than a Maruti Suzuki WagonR.

Skoda Superb 3

The vehicle for sale is a 2011 Skoda Octavia and the asking price is only Rs 4.5 lakhs, which is a great deal. The car is available in Maharashtra and till now, it has been with the first owner. Looking at the pictures of the car, it seems like a well-maintained vehicle and there are no scratches on the body. It has done around 69,000 km, which is not quite a lot for this vehicle. Skoda Superb is a brilliant vehicle and can survive for years if it is maintained well.

This is the top-end variant of the vehicle and comes in the maroon colour. The ad on the Facebook marketplace also claims that there are no dents on the body and the condition is just like a new vehicle and the pictures can confirm to that claim. This is the top-end version of the car and comes with a long list of features. A few features that are mentioned in the post include a sunroof, electrically powered front seats with memory function, steering mounted controls, infotainment system and more. The Skoda Superb gets a very premium cabin. The dashboard of the sedan looks very classy and design like a luxury car.

Skoda Superb 1

The used Skoda Superb for sale gets powered by a petrol engine. In 2011, the Skoda Superb offered a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine option. It produces a maximum power of 160 Bhp and peak torque of 250 Nm. Skoda also used to offer a more powerful 3.5-litre V6 version, which generates a maximum power of 260 Bhp and peak torque of 350 Nm. The AWD V6 engine powered Superb is a rare breed in India. However, the one seen in the pictures is pretty popular and received a lot of appreciation in the Indian market. For such an affordable price, customers can buy new cars like Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Hyundai Santro in the Indian market. However, moving around in a big car makes sure that there is a lot of attention coming to your way.  The Superb also offers optimum passenger comfort. Since it is a fully-loaded car, it came with 12 CD changer system in the infotainment system, which was a rare thing to see in those days.

Skoda Superb 4

The car also comes with a new battery, new tyres and is mechanically perfect. According to the owner, who has posted the ad, the car returns a maximum of 12 km/l while on the highway the mileage increases to a bit and becomes 14 km/l.

Maruti S-Cross driver FINED for ‘not wearing a helmet’: Starts using helmet while driving in protest

With the new MV Act implemented in almost all the states and union territories of India, there are numerous news reports involving heavy fines on the roads. Well, a man from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, who was driving his Maruti Suzuki S-Cross received an electronic fine from the police for not wearing a helmet. Piyush Varshney, received the challan on 27th August, which is before the implementation of the new MV Act.

After the cops issued the e-challan to Piyush, he has now regularly started wearing a helmet whenever he’s driving the vehicle around. He received the challan of Rs 500, which was issued using the old rules of MV Act. It is not known if Piyush has already paid the fine.

Talking to ANI, Piyush said that he now wears the helmet daily while driving his car due to the fear of getting a fine again. The challan received by Piyush has his vehicle number in place but the image of the car is missing. Instead, there is a picture of a two-wheeler with helmetless riders. Nonetheless, now that the news has become viral on the Internet, the Police authorities have said that they are investigating the matter and will check if Piyush has been issued a wrong fine. They have also said that they will cancel the fine if needed.

The police have also said that such wrong fines can happen due to the wrong entry of the reason by the operator issuing the fine. However, it should be noted that in a similar case, a car driver received a fine for not wearing a helmet and later a scooter was found using a fake number plate, which matches the car’s registration number. In the past, there have been many similar cases where car drivers have been wrongly issued fines for not wearing a helmet. In a few cases, cops have even issued on-spot fines to the car driver for not wearing a helmet.

That’s not it. Last year, a motorcycle rider in Goa was issued a fine for not wearing a seatbelt. It was an on-spot challan by the traffic police officers and the picture of the challan receipt became viral on the Internet.

With the new MV Act in place, which has increased the fines to the highest ever in the history of India, a lot of absurdly large amounts of fine have come into the light. The move has been done to ensure road safety and make sure that people follow the rules properly. The Indian roads are one of the most dangerous in the world and the new fines will ensure that people do not break the law because of the fear of high fine amounts.

Tata Motors has launched the second Kraz edition of the Nexon in the Indian market. The limited-edition Nexon is available in four variants and the base version is priced at Rs 7.58 lakh, ex-showroom. The Nexon Kraz is available in both petrol and diesel engine options and both the engine options get an automatic transmission.

Nexon Kraz 2

The second edition of the Tata Nexon Kraz looks quite different from the first version of the SUV. It gets special orange highlights all over, which makes it look different from the regular Nexon. To start with, the Nexon Kraz gets as many as ten styling highlights on the outside and the inside.

Nexon Kraz 3

At the outside, there is a new Tromso Black body colour with dual-tone Sonic-silver roof colour. It makes the vehicle look very special. The tangerine highlights can be seen on the outside rearview mirrors, grille inserts and the alloy wheels. Also, there is the KRAZ badging on the tailgate of the limited edition Nexon. There are a lot of changes done to the cabin too. The vehicle gets tangerine coloured seat fabric, which surely looks great and adds a fresh feel to the vehicle. Apart from that, the vehicle gets tangerine coloured seat-stitching too, which adds a premium feel and look to it. The dashboard gets contrasting tangerine highlights around the air-vent surrounds and the whole set-up with piano black dashboard looks great. The console gets piano black inserts and the same accents can be seen on the steering wheel too.

Commenting on the introduction of the latest edition of the Nexon KRAZ, Mr Vivek Srivatsa, Head Marketing, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said,

“We have always been very proud of the Nexon and since its inception, it has been appreciated by customers and the media alike. By deploying the Cartoq TRUE PRICE, we help you identify the best deals. The best deals are those where listed price is lower than the TRUE PRICE. So, we scan through the car listings across major used car sites, compute their TRUE PRICE, and present the best deals for you.

The shortlist for this article was based on the analysis we ran on September 9th, 2019; so, by the time you read this article, there is a good chance that the specific car may no longer be available. The automobile industry is going through its worst times and the sales figures have gone down tremendously. Amidst of all this there are still some manufacturers who are doing well in terms of numbers. It is none other than the very Indian Maruti Suzuki. sales figures for the month of August 2019 are out and guess what? Maruti Suzuki Dzire has regained the top position in the sales chart.

Maruti Dzire Thrid Gen Photo

In fact, cars in top 5 ranks are all occupied by cars from Maruti Suzuki’s stable. Rank one is taken by Maruti Suzuki Dzire, followed by Maruti Suzuki Swift, WagonR, Baleno and Alto. This shows how popular Maruti Suzuki as a brand is among Indians. coming to the figures Maruti Sold 13,274 units of Dzire in August. This is too low when compared to the earlier figures. Earlier, the top ranked car would be selling above 18,000 units easily every month now the same has been limited to 13,274.

Second Rank holder is the Swift. Maruti Suzuki has sold 12,444 units of Swift hatchback in India. It comes with both petrol and diesel engine options and competes with he likes of Ford Figo, Hyundai Grand i10 in the segment.

Coming in at third position is probably one of India’s most loved family car ‘WagonR’. Maruti Suzuki sold 11,402 units of WagonR across the country in August 2019. It comes two engine options, petrol and CNG variants and get both manual and AMT gearboxes.

Fourth position is occupied by Maruti Suzuki’s premium hatchback Baleno. 11,067 units Baleno’s were sold across the country and fifth position is taken by Alto. Maruti Sold 10,123 units of Alto last month. It had slipped down from 4th to 5th rank.

2019 Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 4

Alto sales have been down for some time because of the economic slowdown as well as the poor demand from the rural market. As a result of low demand and this economic crisis, Maruti had put a halt on production at their plants to clear out heir old inventories.

8 Vehicles out of the top 10 vehicles in the sales chart are from Maruti Suzuki. Other Brand that made it to the chart is Hyundai with Grand i10 at 6th and Hyundai Venue at 7th rank.  Hyundai sold 9,403 units of Grand i10 which includes newly launched Nios figures also and 9,342 units of Venue compact SUV in the month of August .

Another fact that one cannot ignore is that once again Hyundai Venue outsold Maruti Suzki Vitara Brezza by 2,233 units. Maruti only sold 7,109 units of Brezza and is currently at the bottom of the sales chart. Things might change in future when Maruti introduces Petrol and CNG variants in Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest passenger car manufacturer has been working on a new small car S-Presso for a very long time now. Maruti S Presso Rear Spyshot 1

The images of the rear are uploaded by the GaadiWaadi and this time around S-Presso is caught testing in a blue colour. Just like front of the car, S-Presso has a boxy design language at the rear as well. there are not a lot of character lines to be seen. The tail lights are of square shape with indicators and reverse light included in them. A pair of reflectors are also present right above the bumper. The rear bumper is given a black color and it seems like the S-Presso will not be getting body colored bumpers across the range. Wearing chappals/sandals while riding a motorcycle? Get ready for Rs. 1,000 fine!

The amended Motor Vehicles Act is making cops across India dig into little known sections of the law, and these laws can be used against you. One such law is the one against riding a geared motorcycle with chappals/sandals. Under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, you can be fined Rs. 1,000 for riding a geared motorcycle while wearing chappals/sandals. Repeat offenders could even face jail time of 15 days, reports IndiaTimes.

Man Riding Royal Enfield Classic While Wearing Chappals
Image used to illustrate!

The logic behind this rule is that chappals/sandals may interfere with gear shifting, and this could potentially lead to accidents. It could also lead to lower grip on the brake lever, which is again a safety hazard. Moreover, riding any two wheeler with chappals/sandals can cause severe injuries during a fall as the foot is not protected. Ideally, everyone should were motorcycle boots while riding a two wheeler in the interest of safety. However, that may not be practical for most people, which is why they prefer to ride with chappals/sandals. A safer alternative will be covered shoes that offer some amount of protection, and also lot of grip for gear shifting.

Most cops across India are yet to begin implementing the law against chappals/sandals on geared motorcycles. However, don’t be surprised if you’re actually stopped for this offence, and fined a hefty Rs. 1,000. Many Indian police officials, especially those handling traffic, are known to be very corrupt, and often make up laws or dig up little known offences to either demand a bribe or a legitimate penalty from vehicle owners.

So, in your own interest, it’s best that you wear covered shoes while riding a geared two wheeler. And if you can afford it, opt for motorcycle boots, which will protect you during a fall. Also, ensure that a crash helmet is worn while riding any kind of two wheeler. That’s the bare minimum you can do for your own safety.

Meanwhile, protests against the exorbitant fines under the amended Motor Vehicles Act has broken out across many states. In Jharkhand and Odisha, angry citizens were seen protesting against these fines and also surrounding police officials and politicians openly flouting the law. Many state governments in India including West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Kerala and Goa have chosen not to implement the steep fines under the amended Motor Vehicles Act. Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik is said to have told law enforcement officials to stop charging hefty penalties from rule breakers for 3 months, during which they have been also asked to spread awareness among motorists about the various traffic offences, and the fines associated with them. In other parts of India though, law enforcement agencies have already begun levying hefty fines on traffic rule breakers.

Honda Amaze: Used Car Buyers’ Guide

Honda Amaze: Know the car

This is Honda’s offering for the sub 4m compact sedan market in India. It was based on the Brio hatchback but came with the added benefit of in-creased cabin space, practicality of a boot and frugal running costs of a diesel motor. Launched in April 2013, the Amaze is into its second generation and continues to be the second largest selling compact sedan in the market.

The Amaze has won hearts thanks to its supremely comfortable and spacious cabin, availability of a fuss free CVT automatic and the torquey diesel motor. The second gen model is even better and has put Honda into top gear mode in the Indian car market.

When launched in 2013, prices started at Rs 4.99 lakh as compared to Rs 5.99 for the current model sold today.

Brief history of the Honda Amaze in India

Honda Amaze Generations

Honda launched the Amaze in April 2013. Both 1.2 petrol and 1.5 diesel were offered with the latter making it’s debut here in India. Over the years, Honda has been offering new versions, limited editions and other changes to keep the model alive and kicking. In Jan 2014, SX version was added with more safety features, Jan 2015 saw the introduction of a top spec VX(O) model while a CNG model was added in Feb 2015.

In March 2016, three years after the models introduction, Honda rolled out the first facelift. Two years later in Feb 2018, the current or the second gen model was showcased at the Auto Expo and eventually launched in May 2018. The same model got a new top-end CVT in the VX trim in April 2019 and special Ace edition in June 2019.

The car today comes with both 1.2 petrol and 1.5 diesel with a CVT automatic being offered in both the fuel types.

New Honda Amaze: Who is the typical buyer for a new Amaze?

Honda Amaze Used Car Photo 5

Honda remains an aspirational brand for many and the Amaze is a proper stepping-stone into the Honda family. The Amaze is aimed at second time car buyers who want to move away from small hatchbacks and own a sedan that has a much higher social status in the country. The Amaze offers all the benefits of a compact sedan without compromising on the core values of the brand like premium interiors, comfort, space and a higher brand recall.

Most customers are young individuals with micro families and in bigger cities. Many are corporate professionals who want to be associated with a Honda tag. The availability of a superior CVT automatic also pulls in those who want a fuss free sedan for urban usage. The Amaze, given the sheer amount of space and comfort is also an alternative for those who don’t have the extra budget for the more expensive City model.

Used Honda Amaze: Who is the typical buyer for a used Amaze?

A used Honda Amaze is aimed at those who have a budget for a smaller car but want a bigger, dikki waali gaadi for themselves and the family. Owning a sedan, over a hatchback, is still a high feeling for most. Today a mid-size hatchback easily costs over Rs 6-7 lakh on road and this is enough money to get hold of a 2-year old used Honda Amaze.

A used Amaze is also preferred by those who are looking at spacious interiors. The older generation Dzire lacked in this aspect and further, owning to its popularity in the commercial segment, some used car owners stay away from it and end up looking at the Amaze.

Used Honda Amaze: Key Positives

The Honda Amaze offers tremendous amount of space on the inside, which has been its key selling factor. Matching this aspect is the comfort factor of the seats, especially the rear ones. For those looking at fuel economy and have a lot of running to do, the diesel version comes in handy. The 1.5 litre diesel motor is good for over 100 PS and yet is extremely frugal.

The Amaze also excels in terms of ease-of-driving thanks to light con-trols and good visibility. The current get model, launched in May 2018 further improved across all parameters including design, even more space on the inside and best in class CVT transmission on both fuel types. Contrary to reports, schedule maintenance cost of the Amaze is as low as 35 paise per km for petrol and 49 paise per km for diesel over a period of 1 lac km!

Used Honda Amaze: Key Negatives

The Honda Amaze continues to suffer from poor noise levels of the diesel motor. We don’t deny its performance or economy but as compared to cars like the Ford Aspire, high sound levels of the diesel unit is a bother. Ditto for gearshift quality with this fuel type.

Though very spacious at the rear, headroom is limited for tall individuals. Surprisingly, the Amaze does not offer rear air-con vents and misses out on high-end features like LED headlights.

The ideal used Honda Amaze one can buy

Honda Amaze Used Car Photo 2

Ideally, look out for the facelift model of the 1st generation Honda Amaze that was launched in March 2016. It came with a fresh new look, all-new cabin design and added features. Most owners also opt for an extended warranty coverage that means this facelift Amaze could offer you better peace of mind factor. Make sure the car hasn’t run over 40,000 – 50,000 so that you don’t have invest into schedule part replacement for years to come.

Buying older and newer used Honda Amaze compact sedans

Honda Amaze Used Car Photo 4

The Honda Amaze’s journey in India can be broken into three parts – the original or the first model launched in April 2013, the facelift in March 2016 and the second generation launched in May 2018.

Thankfully, the used car market is full of options from all these three Amaze models with the earlier ones going cheap. We have seen prices as low as Rs 2.5 lakh for such examples.
The facelift was sold from March 2016 till May 2018 and be ready to shell out anything from Rs 4.5 – 5.5 lakh for a used example.

The current gen model is also on sale in the used car market but prices are over Rs 7 lakh for less used, well kept examples.

If adventurous (higher risk appetite), what to buy. For exam-ple, enthusiasts or those who get tempted by luxury may opt for the Accord/Camry / Superb V6. Much more powerful but lower mileage and higher cost of parts and maintenance if things go wrong.

The 1.2-litre petrol motor is rev happy but given the weight of the car, it is not going to excite you much. The diesel motor with 100 PS of power can be rewarding in the right hands but lets you down with its noise levels and a not so smooth gearshift action.

Used Honda Amaze for the enthusiast?

We don’t think the Amaze can make for a good enthusiast’s car, one that will leave you grinning. You may look elsewhere at cars like the Ford As-pire!

Buying Advice

What you should check, and typical problems for the Honda Amaze

The Honda Amaze is a fairly reliable car without any major issues reported by owners. That said, early wear of the brake pads is a major concern and owners have reported of having to change disc pads every 20,000 km or so. Suspension issues in the first generation model were also common and so was the limited ground clearance specially when driving with a load of passengers.

Apart from this, routine maintenance is more than enough to keep this sedan going trouble free. There have been two recalls of the car and if you are test-driving one that was made in the below mentioned period, make sure the owner took the car to the workshop for the said work to be carried out free of cost.

Amaze models made before July 2014: preventive replacement of driver side air bag inflator for 1,235 units.

Amaze models made in April and May 2018 : preventive inspection of EPS (Electric-Assist Power Steering) Sensor harness.

Used Honda Amaze compact sedan: Typical maintenance issues and problems explained

Honda Amaze Used Car Photo 3

During the test drive of a used Honda Amaze, make sure you apply the brakes multiple times, even replicating a high speed-braking run. Some owners have reported of early brake wear and you feel the brakes are not performing up to the mark or if you hear grinding sounds from the tyres, it means the pads need a change.

If the car has run a lot and is from 2013-2015, watch out for soggy or soft rear suspension and noise from the front one. Drive the used Honda Amaze over broken roads and watch out for discomfort and noise.

Apart from this, try to notice any major hits and damages on the underbelly of the Amaze as ground clearance on the first gen model was poor.

Used Honda Amaze: Expected Service Costs

A set of new brake pads, including labour, could cost as much as Rs 4000-5000. There are OES ones available out there in the open market and these costs far less.

A new suspension job though would be very expensive and hence ask the workshop technicians to inspect it properly. Sometimes new bushes will do the job just fine.

While the current gen Amaze has extremely low service costs, lets have a look at what you would pay for the 40,000 km, 50,000km and 60,000km servicing:

Amaze Petrol: Rs 4571 / Rs 3152 / Rs 4852
Amaze Diesel: Rs 6581 / Rs 4732 / Rs 7494

Honda Amaze: Expected real-world fuel economy

The 1.2 petrol of the Amaze isn’t as efficient as say the Dzire petrol. While the earlier models offers 12-13 kmpl in city usage, the latest gen improves by 5%. However, if its economy that you want, have a look at a used Honda Amaze diesel. It easily does 18-20 kmpl in city usage if you use the higher gears and over 25 kmpl out on open roads at speeds of 80-90 km/h. The CVT models of the new age Amaze are as efficient as their manual counterparts.

Maintenance and service tips for Honda Amaze used compact sedan

As the scheduled maintenance service of the Amaze isn’t too high, we recommend sticking to an authorized workshop. This is even more important if the used Honda Amaze you are purchasing is still under factory or extended warranty.

Used Amaze: What to avoid

Honda Amaze Used 48

We would say avoid the first gen, pre-facelift model that was sold from April 2013 till March 2016 mainly because it looks dated with bland interiors. The facelift model brought in a fresh appeal to the car and is the one to go for.

As we have said before, if you are in the marker for a used Honda Amaze, pick one that was sold between March 2016 and April 2018. This facelift model of the first generation Amaze is a perfect pick for those looking at a spacious and a comfortable used compact sedan.

Buying used Honda Amaze: Our recommendations

Our choice is to pick a less used 2017 model that will still be in warranty. A used petrol Honda Amaze is apt for someone who has a monthly running of under 1500km. On the other hand, given the frugal nature of the diesel motor, if you have monthly usage, spending extra on a diesel Amaze is recommended.

For a less used 2017 model, post bargaining, you should be able to seal the deal at about Rs 4.5 lakh for a petrol and under Rs 5.5 lakh for a diesel Amaze.

Alternatives to Honda Amaze in the used car market

A used Maruti Dzire (see Buyers’ Guide here) is the best alternate to a used Honda Amaze. However, do note that the older generation Dzire will not offer the space and comfort levels of an Amaze. That said, the long term ownership experience in smaller towns might be better.

A second alternative to a used Honda Amaze is a used Hyundai Xcent. Thanks to poor resale value, you can save a lot of money if you opt for this Korean compact sedan.

If you want diesel performance and a better drive, search for a used Ford Aspire. Resale is poor again and the 100 PS diesel motor is a delight to drive.

The economic slowdown is real and it is very much visible in the automobile industry. many manufacturers have put a stop on production to clear out their stocks. Executive sedan segment is one such segment that had also suffered because of the same. it has been a segment that had gained popularity among Indians lately. Sales number for the same segment for the month of August 2019 are out and they look promising for Hyundai.

Executive sedans comprise of cars such as the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, VW Vento, Toyota Yaris and so on. For the month of August 2019. Hyundai Verna has placed itself on the top of the sales chart followed by Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Honda City at third position.

Hyundai had sold 1,591 units of Verna executive sedan in the month of August. Maruti Suzuki sold 1,596 units of Ciaz sedan and  1,593 units of Honda City were sold in August this year. Difference between the top 3 contestants is just a couple of units only. other manufacturers that made it to the list were Skoda rapid with 791 units followed by VW vento, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Sunny and Fiat Linea at the last spot with 4 units.

Maruti Ciaz 1.5 Diesel 1

These figures in it self may not look worrisome but, when these figures are compared with last year sales, gravity of the situation is revealed. compared to August 2018, Hyundai has a negative growth of 52 percent and Maruti has a sales dip of -77 percent compared to last year and even though Honda City obtained the third place it has a negative growth of 43 percent. Last year same month, a total of 15,737 units of executive sedans were sold in the executive sedan segment, whereas this year they could only sell 6,140 units.

Coming back to Hyundai Verna, it’s base variant is very attractively priced, and it undercuts both the facelifted Maruti Ciaz and the Honda City, with an average ex-showroom price tag of Rs. 8.08 lakhs. The Verna sold in India is now available with four engine options: a 1.4 liter petrol with 99 Bhp-132 Nm outputs and a 6 speed manual gearbox, a 1.6 liter petrol engine with 121 Bhp-151 Nm outputs, and 6 speed manual and automatic gearbox options, a 1.4 liter turbocharged diesel with 89 Bhp-220 Nm and a 6 speed manual gearbox, and a 1.6 liter turbocharged diesel engine with 126 Bhp-260 Nm, and 6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

The engine-gearbox combinations offered on the Verna are the highest in segment, and this gives the buyer a lot of choice. Maruti Ciaz on the other hand is offered in a petrol-manual, petrol-automatic and diesel-manual combination. Similarly, the Honda City is also available in the same engine-gearbox combination as the Ciaz.

Gujarat CUTS fine on triple riding by 90%: Will other states follow?

$
0
0

Gujarat is the first state that has begun slashing fines massively under the amended Motor Vehicles Act (MVA), which was passed by the Union Government of India just weeks ago. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, earlier last week, had asked transport officials of the state to take a relook at the steep fines in the amended Motor Vehicles Act. Following consultations with transport department officials, the state government of Gujarat has decided to slash the fine on triple riding by a whopping 90 %. The original fine for triple riding – a particularly dangerous form of overloading on two wheelers – under the new Motor Vehicles Act was Rs. 1,000. The Gujarat state government has reduced this to Rs. 100. What was meant to be a deterrent to dangerous riding will not longer be such a deterrent given the steep reduction in fine.

And it’s not triple riding alone that has seen fines being slashed. The new fine for not riding without license in Gujarat is Rs. 3,000, down from Rs. 5,000 that the amended MVA had prescribed. Similarly, the fine for not wearing a helmet/seatbelt has been reduced to Rs. 500 from the original Rs. 1,000. Speeding will now result in a fine of Rs. 1,500 instead of the original Rs. 2,000. These reduction is fines are said to be due to public sentiment.

The Gujarat government, thanks to the federal structure of the Indian constitution that bestows various powers on the states, is well within its rights to slash fines. Notably, transport is a state subject.

Will other states follow?

Triple Riding Featured

Many other states in India have also expressed deep reservations about the steep penalties under the amended MVA. Some states such as West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan and Punjab have even refused to implement the revised fines under the new MVA. As for Odisha, the chief minister of that state, Naveen Patnaik, has asked law enforcement officials to go slow on booking traffic rule violators for three months, and has instead asked them to spread awareness about road rules and steep fines. Given the Gujarat government’s move to reduce fines on several dangerous acts such as triple riding, driving without seatbelt and riding without a helmet, it’s likely that other states will also follow suit and slash fines massively. If that happens, the very purpose of having massive fines as a severe deterrent to traffic law breakers will be negated.

Will the Gujarat government’s move to slash fines encourage dangerous riding/driving?

Absolutely. Overloading a two wheeler with three people is extremely dangerous as it makes the vehicle unstable. An unstable vehicle not only puts the lives of its passengers at risk but also endangers the safety of other road users. By slashing fine on such a dangerous act by 90 %, the Gujarat government seems to be tacitly encouraging such behavior. This could set a shameful precedent. We hope that betters sense prevails.
